Renewed: Perry Mason

Matthew Rhys to return for a second season as HBO private investigator.

HBO has renewed Perry Mason, starring Matthew Rhys, for a second season.

The series is based on Erle Stanley Gardner’s novels, and also starkly different to the classic series starring Raymond Burr.

It also features John Lithgow, Tatiana Maslany, Chris Chalk, Shea Whigham, Juliet Rylance, and Robert Patrick.

“It has been an exciting journey to work with the immensely talented team behind Perry Mason,” said Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming. “Viewers have relished being transported back in time to 1930’s Los Angeles each week, and we are thrilled to welcome the show back for a second season.”

The series debuted as HBO’s most-watched series premiere in nearly two years, with the first episode has now been seen by 8-million US viewers.

Perry Mason airs in Australia on FOX Showcase.

Season one credits: Executive producers (in alphabetical order), Amanda Burrell, Robert Downey Jr., Susan Downey, Ron Fitzgerald, Joe Horacek, Rolin Jones and Timothy Van Patten (who also directs); co-executive producer, Aida Rodgers; producer, Matthew Rhys; created by Rolin Jones & Ron Fitzgerald; based on the characters created by Erle Stanley Gardner.

  1. It is a slow burn this one, I almost dropped it after a couple of episodes but it just gets better and better for me. Happy about a second season.

  2. I’m still trying to work this one out. As a detective series it reminds me of Colombo with more socially unacceptable behaviour. But it really doesn’t wear its moniker well as a tribute to the original Perry Mason.

      1. You mean where they faked a letter making him EB’s apprentice, he cheated on the bar exam and was sworn in to the bar, and agreed to take over the trial?
The cast it good but the writing is bad, slow and confusing with little real story of note, with only the standard Mason court room climax dragged out over 3 episodes to come. The original numbers were 0.88/1.7m for the first episode. So over 6m have streamed it later.
