Vale: Cary Young

Quizmaster who won Sale of the Century, then hired to write questions, has died.

Quizmaster Cary Young, who won Sale of the Century, then hired to write questions, has died aged 83.

He died peacefully at Nellie Melba Village in Wheelers Hill joined by family, after a battle with Alzheimer’s.

Young made around 70 appearances on the Nine game show across the 1980s and ’90s.

“Whilst living in Queensland dad saw an opportunity on this show Sale of the Century and he thought he could use some of his knowledge and things he loved which then became a new chapter of his life,” daughter Michelle Young told the Herald Sun.

He later went on to be employed by Grundys to write questions for their quiz.

Throughout his quizzing career Young gave multiple prizes to charitable organisations and later wrote the quiz column for the Herald Sun from 2000 to 2006.

In 2017 he also became locked in a legal battle over unpaid royalties for a board game, Smart Ass, having written some 6000 questions.

  1. Game show TV is at its best when there are experts as contestants, and even the cast. It can be Sale of the Century, The Chase, Wheel of Fortune, Letters & Numbers, and more. A great contestant will hook you in.

  2. Cary was really smart. He knew his trivia. Sale of the Century / Temptation a great family show. Tony Barber, Glenn Ridge and Ed Phillips all did fantastic job hosting!
