Scooby-Doo spin-off, featuring the voice of Mindy Kaling, has been renewed.

Scooby-Doo spin-off Velma, featuring the voice of Mindy Kaling, has been renewed for a second season.

Velma tells the origin story of Velma Dinkley (Kaling), the unsung and under-appreciated brains of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. gang.

Joining Kaling in the Mystery Machine is Constance Wu as Daphne, Glenn Howerton as Fred and Sam Richardson as Shaggy.

Suzanna Makkos, EVP, Original Comedy and Adult Animation, Max and Adult Swim, revealed the renewal during a panel at Annecy International Animated Film Festival this week.

The series screens on FOX8 and Binge.

  1. Surely this must have something to do with the lead time on animation rather than a response to viewership or reviews. Some animated shows get renewed before their seasons premiere, for example Fox in the US has renewed Dan Harmon’s upcoming Krapopolis for season 3 before even one episode has aired. As a Mindy Kaling and Scooby Foo fan I tried a few times to get into this. I bailed after episode 3. Not good.

  2. How does that happen?

It’s 1.7/10 on imdb and 7% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Its universally hated, not a result of review bombs. Not good press for “Max”.

    1. It got an initial order for two seasons. So the term renewal is misleading.

Two-season initial orders are becoming quite common these days. It means a faster turnaround for the second season, plus it saves money. For animated shows, as a lot of assets get re-used it’s just cost-saving.

Of course then when a show sucks…
