US actor Andre Braugher, best known for Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Homicide: Life on the Street, has died.

US actor Andre Braugher, best known for Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Homicide: Life on the Street, has died aged 61.

His publicist confirmed he died after a short illness.

Braugher starred as Captain Raymond Holt on Brooklyn Nine-Nine from 2013 – 2021. He received four Emmy Award nominations and he won two Critics Choice Awards for Best Supporting Actor.

Hs breakthrough role was in 1989’s Glory, starring alongside Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington.

Despite the part, he told press in 2019 that he struggled to find work in a Hollywood where roles for African American actors were “few and far between. Period”.

But he would establish himself with the role of Detective Frank Pembleton in Homicide: Life on the Street, based on a book by David Simon, from 1993–1999.

He also starred in the 2008 sci-fi miniseries The Andromeda Strain alongside Benjamin Bratt and Eric McCormack. Other credits included Kojak, Thief, Salem’s Lot, A Soldier’s Girl, Hack, 10,000 Black Men Named George, Gideon’s Crossing, Murder in Mississippi, plus Spirit Untamed,Baytown Outlaws, Passengers, The Mist, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Poseidon, A Better Way to Die, Frequency, Thick as Thieves, All the Rage and City of Angels.

Terry Crews posted a tribute to the actor on Instagram, “Can’t believe you’re gone so soon,” it read. “I’m honored to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you and shared 8 glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent.”

  1. I’m most familiar with him from B99 – he will always be remembered as legendary actor, buy when you look at all of the tributes from everyone involved from his shows, he was clearly a family focused and class act as well. And I hope that get remember too.
