Meet Law & Order: UK

Britain's version of the Dick Wolf series has premiered on ITV, complete with the "dum dum" musical stamp.

laouk1And here is the cast of Law & Order: UK, the British version of Dick Wolf’s long-running UK series which premiered on ITV yesterday.

As previously reported, Freema Agyeman from Doctor Who is a regular, playing crown prosecutor Alesha Philips.

“You’ve got the streets of London in every other shot so it’s got a different flavour but it’s retained all the things I think are really great about the show – it’s got a real pace to it,” she said.

Others in the cast include Jamie Bamber (Battlestar Galactica), Bradley Walsh, Harriet Walter, Ben Daniels, and Bill Paterson.

laouk2The UK version will apparently look familiar to fans of the US prototype. All the scripts are taken from the original Law & Order show but adapted to fit with the British legal system. It has the doom-laden opening music, the black and white title slates and the shaky camera work, and even has the little “dum dum” noise separating out each scene.

Wolf says that legally “the biggest difference here was the wigs. The law is not really that dissimilar”.

The international franchise may not end there either.

“I’d love to see a Middle Eastern version – I’d love to do it in Cairo,” Wolf says.

“I think this kind of show done in a major Muslim city would be eye-opening because it’s an exploration of human frailty and human weakness that is universal.”

ITV has made 13 episodes of the series.

  1. I just watched the newest version of L&O . You would think that the first episode would be something new . Instead they rehashed a 15 year old episode and renamed it ( Care ) . Law&Order U.K. is doomed to fail . What do they think we wouldn,t remember a classic episode . The producers of L&O must think we are stupid . I hope Law&Order U.K. fails just like all the other fourth program installments . Don,t waste your time wachting this show . Law&Order U.K. sucks . I wish I had that hour of my life back . SAH

  2. I’m curious as to whether or not L&O:UK will air on American F.T.A.

While I’m completely over American cop shows, it would nice to see one in a completely different context (such as Asia/Europe/Middle East) as Dick has mentioned.

  3. If it’s made by Universal perhaps Seven will get the rights, would be nice if Ten got it though – could be a solution to their Monday problem! I note that a lot of the BSG cast have very quickly moved onto other projects.

  4. Seems a bit silly having the exact same plot’s as the US version. I would watch this, but given I’ve seen so many of the Vanilla series, I’ll already know the outcome…

  5. Television Without Pity called it “chung! chung!”
Wikipedia says Richard Belzer called it “the Dick Wolf Cash Register Sound”,
and that the actors jokingly call it “doink doink”.
But I’ve *never* heard that sound called “dum dum”!
