800 Words: first look

Sneak peek at upcoming dramedy with Erik Thomson as a writer in a seachange to New Zealand.

Seven has released its first look at upcoming dramedy 800 Words.

The series stars Erik Thomson as recently widowed, George Turner, who quits his job as a popular 800 word columnist for a top selling Sydney newspaper. Over the internet he buys a house on an impulse in a remote New Zealand seaside town. He then has to break the news to his two teenage kids who just lost their mum, and now face an even more uncertain future.

Co-created by James Griffin (Outrageous Fortune, The Almighty Johnsons, Westside) and Maxine Fleming (Being Eve), the 8 hour series is a co-production between Seven and New Zealand’s South Pacific Pictures.

The cast also includes Melina Vidler, Benson Jack Anthony, Rick Donald, Bridie Carter and Emma Leonard.

  1. Think any show that is filmed across at least two countries is a good thing, it then shows the best scenery of both places and I am sure it will get a larger audience viewers wanting to see places they recognize on television.

  2. I understand what people are saying, it does look a bit old fashioned however everyone was bagging Rafters before it started and look how successful that was.

Also being a part NZ production is a good thing. They have made many quality dramas over the last 10 years.

  3. Just a rehash of Always Greener which was also on Seven. I kmow it is a co propductin but the star is a New Zealander, the location is in NZ & I assume the crew were NZ as well. Is NZ becoming to Aussie tv production what Canada is to the US?

  4. I applaud the collaboration between the two countries, as it is both a local production and filed ‘on location’
Again people are negative before it airs.
I agree with Gonzo this has the potential to do well, but it depends on the over-promotion and scheduling (ie. time slot of a start time later then 8:30 will be ridiculous [as it always is anyway]).
Well Done for doing something different, how can a family on a beach look dated I don’t know.

    1. The Program is being produced by the 7 Network Australia and New Zealand’s South Pacific Productions so that makes it a Australia/New Zealand Co Production and that is okay with me
