Southern Cross site in Canberra set for redevelopment

Regional broadcaster is yet to decide on the future of its Playout facilities.

Southern Cross looks set to revamp its network Playout centre with a development application lodged for its Canberra site in Watson.

The 4.4 hectare site on the corner of Aspinall Street and Negus Crescent is planing to demolish the current building to make way for 186 apartments, 134 townhouses, childcare centre and commercial units.

Fairfax reports the $74 million project will be delivered in three stages and take between four to six years to complete.

A Southern Cross spokesperson told TV Tonight they will remain on site for the time being via a long term lease while they work out next steps.

Prime Media recently outsourced Playout operations to MediaHub in Ingelburn, NSW, resulting in the loss of 28 Canberra staff positions.

The site was built in 1974 ahead of colour television.
