7HD ahead of TEN?

The Australian Financial Review says 7HD will launch its “full-strength service” from this Saturday, 15 days ahead of TEN HD.

It claims Seven ad execs have been telling advertisers to book from Dec 1.

But in the latest 7HD Guide issued today the official line is still a few weeks away. “7HD – now seven weeks advanced on its mooted competition – moves into advanced multi-channelling in the coming weeks.”

The Nine Network was also due to launch its HD channel in November. As this now appears increasingly unlikely, AFR says it is expected to release more details later this week.

Seven is also due to revamp its online HD presence, which still fails to offer any HD programming. TV Tonight continues to offer HD Guides in our Advance Guides section.

  1. Nine and HD – now there are words that shouldn’t be used in the same sentence.

Given the state of their SD channel, surely Nine would be better served by fixing that before trying to bandaid together a HD channel. God only knows that that is going to look like – oh wait, yes I do. Old and tired – like their very disappointing Election coverage and their news coverage and their sporting coverage and their dramas – you get the picture

  2. At this stage ratings are analogue stations only. No forseeable change. Their audience will be so discerning they won’t impact on analogue shows anyway.

  3. It is kind of pathetic. I like Seven, but this attempt to try and beat Ten is just plain stupid. And no doubt they’ll do it without any fanfare, late at night without any prior notice but brag about it the next day…

David, was just wondering if you could explain something- what’s the story with ratings and the HD channels? If they are separate channels, does that mean that the shows will get separate ratings? With Ten having different content, does this mean this new content can make its way into the top twenty shows if they rate that well? And what about series shown on both normal channel and HD channels, do they get combined ratings?

  4. The shows I have seen in the “I Can See Clearly Now” are all airing on the standard channel. It’s just summer filler with a few 2008 shows like BB / Dance etc.

Maybe there is more than one promo?

  5. It sounds like Seven don’t really have any firm plans and have no idea what they are doing, they just want to be first.

Ten is doing an awesome job with their launch and airing promos hyping it up, and providing details on what they want to do with the channel.

Seven on the other hand barely (if at all) promote this new channel on air, and haven’t yet told anyone what they are going to use the channel for. It’s either top secret or they just haven’t even worked it out yet. I’m guessing it’s the latter.

  6. Agree. Our FTA TV is hopeless. Way behind developed countries in Europe, Asia or North America. They are spending too much time preventing PVR’s from ad-skipping than thinking about programming. Tragic. Thanks for Blu-ray and HD-DVD.

  7. I’m worried about what Seven’s determination to run alternate programming on the HD channel in prime time means for its banner shows like Heroes, Desperate Housewives, Prison Break, etc – all of which would no longer be shown in HD.

This inter-network pissing contest is amusing, by the way. Seven keeps announcing things they haven’t actually got readyt yet, Nine announces THEIR channel when it’s common knowledge they don’t have the equipment to operate it yet, and Ten just gets on with a carefully-planned, scheduled-from-the-start launch, complete with a really stunning promo seen during Idol last night (and after Idol, this time with audio 😉

  8. Meh. Frankly I could care less for 7HD. Especially since their currently 7HD schedule is less than inspiring, and their childish attempts at trying to launch before TEN HD has pretty much put me off 7HD altogether (not to mention their crappy reception).

I say kudos to TEN for giving us an alternative to all of their so-called “popular” shows.

  9. A lot of this seems very vague at the moment, but the prospects are exciting. For us regional viewers it looks as if Prime will broadcast Seven HD but it is unclear what SC10 will do, and it seems impossible to find out. (Perhaps you could please, David?)

I think we can forget Nine/WIN when it comes to HD. I’m not sure they even know what it means.
