We ♥ (heart) new looks

Get ready for a “new look Nine” from tomorrow.

Channel Nine will launch its new station IDs from 6pm Monday, led by its adopted slogan ‘We Heart TV.’ It will draw upon the symbolic image of parting clouds and blue skies.

Noting that Nine has been at the “heart” of Australian TV since 1956, the network says, “Heart is a word that embraces all sorts of meanings, and now, in its 52nd year of broadcasting, Nine’s commitment to delivering the very best to its audience is stronger than ever in 2008.”

The new-look on-air campaign will launch with a 60-second promo featuring personalities across Nine’s programming platform, including the teams from National Nine News and 60 Minutes, TODAY, Tracy Grimshaw, Eddie McGuire, The Footy Show, Wide World of Sports, Getaway, Bert Newton, Temptation, and Mornings With Kerri-Anne.

The famed Nine dots will also return permanently to the network’s logo from 6am Monday morning.

The 6pm launch is expected to lead into a new studio look for National Nine News.

MediaSpy has some leaked details on the Nine look and NBN has also hit refresh.

Meanwhile the Sydney Morning Herald says “the gloves are off” in network promotion and commercial television networks are poised to spend millions to buy viewer attention. “Nine has bought billboards, Seven has promos running in cinemas, and both networks are about to launch extensive print and radio campaigns across the nation,” it says.

There are also plenty of old ID clips on YouTube. Remember this?

And finally, here’s a blog that has been using We Heart TV since at least May last year.

Press Release:

Channel Nine viewers will be treated to a brand new on-air look featuring a fresh campaign theme – we ♥ (heart) tv – from 6.00pm tomorrow night.

The heart symbol has been chosen for the slogan because since TCN-9 became the first television station to broadcast in Australia in 1956, Channel Nine has been at the heart of television.

Heart is a word that embraces all sorts of meanings, and now, in its 52nd year of broadcasting, Nine’s commitment to delivering the very best to its audience is stronger than ever in 2008.

The Nine Network – home to some of Australian television’s most memorable moments – has been at the heart of Australian entertainment for five decades. Nine has been at the heart of every big news and current affairs story, as well as at the heart of sport, special events and entertainment programming.

The we♥tv theme will be carried through the network’s entire on-air presentation, providing the audience with a bright and contemporary way to embrace their favourite shows, and coincides with the return of Nine’s famous dotty logo across the platform from 6.00am Monday morning.

  1. I’m just wondering which tv network would have the balls to run a parody of this and have ‘We h8 TV’, SBS should do it, that would make Channel 9 management (boys club) probably cry to Christine Spiteri and ask her why the ‘ethics’ are being so mean.

  2. It looks like Nine have dropped their logo from their News openers. They are just running with National Nine News – similar to Ten News which doesn’t use their logo but the words TEN.

A very brave move to not brand your main news programs with your station ids.

  3. Ch9 can claim they were the first station to air in australia but that doesnt make them better than the others. 2007 was a very bad year for them (and im a ch7 fan for better quality programs) and I don’t believe their quality of programs will surpass the previous year. How many promos did they advertise and we never saw those programs on the air?
They were too busy showing constant reruns of CSI (and its a good show but cant keep watching it over and over).
We are still stuck with the same programs as has been over the years and I dont particularily care about their aussie content as I dont like aussie programs – apart of documentaries and things of fact/reality, so I certainly will not be watching any of these programs.
And I agree with poster Stan about quality of programs and too many commercials (which the commercial thing happens on all stations).

Thank goodness I have dvds and my internet to keep me occupied on nights of bad tv programming!
And let’s see if ch7 can outwit ch9 yet again in 2008!

  4. like i said last week ppl. watch out for channel 9! they are still the one! if ppl are going to talk about the new image of nine may it be good or bad, then guess what! it worked! ive seen the new look and if very NICE! good to see nine has their balls back! seven and ten……. who are they??

  5. how does “Red” represent the things you have said?? Since when did it mean “power”, “force”,
    “number 1”, “heart”, “purpose”,
“strength”, “vision”. Maybe in your head somewhere….. they may mean what you think Channel 7 is, but it by no means has anything to do with the colour red!! or the colour blue for that arguement.

Maybe you are colour blind. Or had too many stubbies

  6. How is this promo going to make programs on Ch 9 better? Give me a break. I stopped watching commercial stations because of the quality of programming and every 8-10 minutes commercial breaks.

  7. *rolls eyes* Two can play at that game, ‘Red’ represents “power”, “force”, “number 1”, “heart”, “purpose”, “strength”, “vision”. ‘Blue’ represents, “sadness”, “feeling down”, “wasted” “cold”, “mean”, “boring”.

  8. I think it’s going to take more than a new motto and a re-vamped logo to win the audience back!

TIP OFF?: Keep an eye on the ABC this week, I saw a cryptic advertisement just before Rage on Saturday night, which insinuated that a change coming to ABC.

I can’t really recall ABC getting involved with hyping itself up like the commercial networks. So I’m curious if there is actually a serious change coming to our screens!?

  9. Im all for everyone having there say but why does everyone have to be so sceptical about new things. Give it a go and see what it is like before you comment on it!!

Neon when was the last time you put together a new TV promotion? Nines stable of personalities couldnt have been that bad and “dreary”… Seven have stolen most of them.

And for who ever said it Blue is WAY WAY BETTER than Red. Red is such an abrupt colour….. Always reminds me of a hospital and the red cross. Blue reminds me of the sky and the sea….nothing wrong with that!!

  10. When they got that guy in from the UK to “rebrand” Nine a couple of years ago, he did exactly the opposite of what Nine needed. Instead of making Nine look fresh and invigorated, he kept it looking tired and stale.

They should have dropped the 70s/80s looking figure “9” from the logo and developed the dots into a new logo.

And now, not only are they reverting to the past, they have even reinstated the even more dated Nine World of Sports logo on the cricket.

You can’t turn back the clock. Changing back to an old image isn’t going to reverse Nine’s fortunes. They need to be dynamic, fresh, new, and above all, it’s content that really matters. If your shows suck, you suck.

  11. I hardly believe 60 Minutes and The Footy Show as well as National Nine News are last century. They still deliver solid ratings most of the time, if N9N had a proper lead in it’d be winning as proven by the cricket.

And nine is focussing on their shows and not just looks. Has anyone read how they’ve commissioned 40 new shows and have the strongest ever investment in Aussie drama? Hello!

David Gyngell obviously wants looks and substance and eventually nine will deliver in both departments as David loves the network and is in it for more than the millions he makes.

  12. Haha, yes, nice comments, Nine PR crew. But do learn the art of subtlety next time, m’kay?

Parting clouds. Blue skies. Methinks someone at Nine’s been listening a teensy bit too literally to their motivational coach. “Think of the clouds clearing to reveal blue skies… and then you’ll be able to make the network the best and brightest again….”

Sadly, that’s not going to happen when the parting clouds and blue skies are accompanied by Nine’s dreary stable of “personalities” and tired old shows – “National Nine News and 60 Minutes, TODAY, Tracy Grimshaw, Eddie McGuire, The Footy Show, Wide World of Sports, Getaway, Bert Newton, Temptation, and Mornings With Kerri-Anne.” Yeah, so very very… well, LAST century.

  13. Does anyone besides me wish they spent less time and effort on “new looks” aka pretty packaging and more effort on actual good quality TV shows

  14. Why in Australia do we hate people who are on top? Someone battles hard and finally gets to the number one spot and we then always turn on them!! Same thing happens with our actors, our musicians. Does this country have a severe case of tall poppy syndrome or what?
Dont we realize the people decide who is number one with our what we chose to watch?
Its great C9 have a new promo but personally, I think they need to get away from the blue theme. Is very stale.
I can just imagine at the end of the year if nine become number one station, we would turn on them and wish someone else would beat them. Very strange behaviour for us Aussies.

  15. I wonder why they started marketing the ‘We Heart TV’ slogan well before all the other new promos starting up on Monday – getting early viewer feedback perhaps?

  16. I can’t wait for this promo in which channel 9 is doing, it’s going to be a ripper of one and blow the competition out of the water.. Can’t wait for it…
