Former Seven building to become apartments

A former Channel Seven office building in South Melbourne is to be demolished to make way for high-rise apartments.

The site housing the seven story building in Wells St South Melbourne was sold for about $15 million late last year.

Trafalgar Corporate Group and Fridcorp will have the building demolished and develop an apartment block with an end value of $135 million.

Fridcorp Managing director Paul Fridman has confirmed he wants to start marketing apartments on the site as early as next month.

Seven Melbourne moved to Docklands in 2002, and is no longer tenant in the premises. Some administration also exists in the nearby Kings Garden Business Park. The office tower sits beside the original HSV7 building (below), located on the corner of Dorcas and Wells St. It is currently leased for City Homicide.

On the corner of Wells and Coventry Streets is Global Studios (below), home to It Takes Two, Dancing with the Stars, Deal or No Deal and Rove, which was until recently under Seven ownership, but is now a 50% share with Global Studios which manages the space.

It is the former site of many flagship Seven shows including Tonight Live and Fast Forward. A swimming pool was added under the studio floor for Man O Man, and still exists to this day.

Some media have incorrectly reported the Global Studios building is to become apartments, but TV Tonight can confirm this has been denied by both Seven and Global.

Last year the Nine Network sold sites in Willoughby and Richmond.

  1. Has the Nine Richmond site been sold? If so it is a little strange because I walked past and the old “GTV Television Channel 9” sign had been re-painted and most signage around the complex had been updated to the dotty logo. (have a photo too).
