Footy Show comments ‘unrelated’ to MP hospitalised

Sources close to the family of Tasmanian MP Paula Wriedt have denied any link between last week’s Sam Newman incident following Ms Wriedt being rushed to hospital today.

“Paula was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital by ambulance a short while ago as the result of an undisclosed medical emergency,” Tasmanian Premier David Bartlett said this afternoon.

“I am not in a position to speculate on the nature of her admission.”

Ms Wriedt was last week the subject of a ribald comment made by controversial television personality Sam Newman on the Nine Network’s The Footy Show.

Channel Nine News tonight reported that the MP was understood to be experiencing marital problems and was having trouble coping.

“Sources close to the family contacted Channel Nine today attempting to distance the Sam Newman incident from today’s traumatic events. They say in no way are the two linked,” said Nine.
