David Tennant to exit Dr. Who

Sob! David Tennant will vacate the role of the tenth Doctor after 2009.

This is gonna hurt.

David Tennant is leaving Doctor Who after 2009.

He made the announcement at the UK’s National Television Awards to the screams of disappointed fans.

Tennant said “I’ve had the most brilliant, bewildering and life-changing time working on Doctor Who. I have loved every day of it. It would be very easy to cling on to the Tardis console for ever and I fear that if I don’t take a deep breath and make the decision to move on now, then I simply never will.”

Tennant took up the role as the tenth incarnation of the Doctor in 2005, after a short stint by Christopher Eccleston. He has been widely lauded for the zest he has brought to the character.

His departure follows earlier announcements by writer Russell T. Davies that he too is to exit.

“I’ve been lucky and honoured to work with David over the past few years,” said Davies, “and it’s not over yet. The tenth Doctor still has five spectacular hours left, after which I might drop an anvil on his head. Or maybe a piano. A radioactive piano.”

  1. The 10th doctor quit before the 2005 series even aired, so I think it’s great that we managed to get 4 fantastic years from David! Mind you, when I first saw the headline, like many others in this thread, my reaction was, “Nooooooooooo!!” He really is “brilliant”!

Good luck to the new Doctor (whoever it may be). I hope they give David a regular companion for the specials next year, though, so that they’ll have some continuity for the 2010 season (which has already been confirmed, so no need for anyone to worry about it not happening).

  2. How I snorted in disgust when Ecclestone left – there was no way this Tennant fop could come close to Chris.

How wrong I was. Tennant became the best Doctor ever. Totally dug what he’s done with the character.

The producers will find a successor worthy enough, just as they did with Tennant.

  3. David Tennant is next going to appear in a one-off called Einstein and Eddington also starring Andy Serkis, which should be good.

  4. While I love David Tennant and consider him to be one of my favourite doctors, I fully understand his wish to move on.

Typecasting has happened to many actors and I think he would like to try some other projects other than simply being known as the doctor.

Besides – I always look forward to a regeneration to see what we now have – some have been better than others – but all interesting.

  5. Yes David do we know what the ABC is planning, will the xMas special be shown before July and with the other special eps air here soon after the UK or months later which has become the norm for Doctor Who on the ABC?

  6. Dakota85, apparently it’s not David’s fault that there are only specials next year rather than a full season. Russell T Davies has been at pains to say that David Tennant took on the Hamlet role only AFTER the production team had made the decision to lighten up in 2009. Believe it or not…

  7. It happened during the original series of Doctor Who, which ran from 1963-1989, so you can expect this to happen.

It would be interesting to see who the eleventh doctor is, as long as Who is back in 2010.

  8. I hope this is not the last we’ve seen of David Tennant. He’s such a fine actor (and looker!) that it will be devestating if he dissapears into type-cast hell!!!

In my mind David will be the consumate Doctor, he played that role brilliantly with comedic and dramatic flair.

    Bring on the Christmas Special!!

By the way David, any news as to whether the ABC will broadcast the Christmas special anywhere near Christmas this year??

  9. I agree with Hel though, its disappointing that actors leave the role at stages like this, esp. when there’s so many actors who would be willing to stick with it. I’ll miss David Tennant, but its because of him we’re not getting a proper season next year of which he’s just going to vacate now. As much as I love him, I love the show more, so I think they should have made him regenerate at the end of the season we just watched and go again. I just hope the UK viewers keep the show alive because DW is the kind of show that can last a long time…

  10. i just heard infamous Mr Knox on 3AW and didnt know David Tennant’s name was not his birth name! According to google…it is Mcdonald! And as we all know Mr Knox has an devotion to PSB…. he apparently got his name from Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys.

    See: http://totallytennant.blogspot.com/2007/12/ten-things-you-never-knew-about-david.html

David took his pseudonym from Pet Shop Boy Neil Tennant after finding that another actor shared his real name. He explains: “I was on the bus looking through Smash Hits and I saw Neil Tennant. I thought it would be a good name as it’s got a good number of consonants in it.” Well, it’s as sensible a reason as any!

  11. Lord knows they’ve found all manner of ways of bringing back The Master, and he’s well past his 13 lives, so I’m sure they’ll find some way of bringing him back again and again and again!

  12. HEL said: “…If the next guy ditches after a couple of seasons then they’re going to be up the creek.”

Don’t worry about the “…only 12 regenerations …” concept, I am sure they will find a way around it when the time comes …. and yes! David will be a very hard act to follow…
    Jack!

  13. I am very, very sad to see him go … he has been a brilliant Doctor and possibly the best …
What I love him most for is the way he would support and promote the programm at every opportunity … more than any Doctor has ever done, and always remined humble and appreciative of the amazing opportunity he was given (as a fan of the show) to be its star for an outstanding four years!
Despite that, I am totally confident that, with Steven Moffat in the driver’s seat from 2010, the program will continue to go from strength to strength … and i don’t for one minute think that they have not already contracted the 11th Doctor but will not be letting anyone know for quite some time!
What an amazing success this program has had … turning 45 next month!!!!
    Jack!

  14. David did a wonderful job playing the Doctor and I’m sure he’ll go on to do great work in the future. Now the excitement starts about who his successor will be…

  15. Nobody should ever take up the role of The Doctor unless they plan on sticking it out for some time. Sure, they’ve got an easy out with the regeneration thing, but there’s a limited number of those. If the next guy ditches after a couple of seasons then they’re going to be up the creek.

Also David Tennant is going to be a very, very hard act to follow. I feel sorry for whoever gets the role.
