British playwright Harold Pinter, a giant of contemporary theatre has died of cancer. He was 78.

Considered a “master of silence” with his use of spartan dialogue and subtext, Pinter wrote plays performed the world over, including in adaptations for television. Pinter sometimes even served as actor and / or director on the teleplays.

He also consulted for Boston Legal.

Pinter also penned several feature films including The French Lieutenant’s Woman, The Comfort of Strangers, The Handmaid’s Tale, and the 2007 remake of Sleuth.
