The inclusion of a pregnancy for Julie Rafter, a mother aged 44 years old, is somewhat new territory for most soaps. “Mature-age” pregnancies are not usually the domain of TV drama, preferring to almost always give them to younger, “magazine cover” actresses.
Shameless, which returns next week to SBS, added a pregnancy for Monica Gallagher, and it resulted in a sucessful birth.
Rebecca Gibney, who had a son nearly five years ago, says the Rafters are thrown a “whole lot of curve balls” by the pregnancy revelation on the show.
“It creates issues for a couple that have been through it all before. Do they want to go through it again? Will they go through it again?
“We might be pregnant, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to keep it … you don’t actually see that many older women falling pregnant (on TV) and it is going to appeal to a lot of women my age.
“Look, you can have a child at any age – as long as you love them unconditionally. That’s all that matters.”
Packed to the Rafters has its series finale tomorrow night on Seven.

Will the elderly-age preganancy be next? And then the parents die after 10 years?
I reckon that she will have an ectopic pregnancy or something serious will happen and Dave will have to choose between Julie’s life or the babies life.When Rebecca was on sunrise this year she said she gets a major health storyline and she said I hope I don’t get killed of because they haven’t renewed my contract. I’m not sure how them having a new child would fit into the show with the 3 kids all grown up. I want to see them becoming grand parents. It would be cool if Ben became a dad. Anyway it should turn out to be a very interesting storyline.
It hasn’t been done before at all, unless you count Desperate Housewives, Nip/Tuck, Seachange (kind of), Outrageous Fortune, Always Greener, Neighbours, Something in the Air. Even Family Ties.

Something In The Air did a “mature age” age pregnancy and the father was a cross dresser! Both were main characters. They kept their baby.
