Jack-BrabhamLROn Monday’s Australian Story, racing legend Sir Jack Brabham reveals the truth about his decision to retire and the tragic death of a close friend that precipitated his departure from the track.

In this 50th anniversary year of his first Formula One World Championship win, “When We Were Racing” looks at the forces that drive him and his motor racing machines.

Revered as a gentleman off the track but a fierce competitor on it, Brabham became the first driver to be knighted for services to motorsport and was Australian of the Year (1966).

He pioneered the rear‐engine race car which revolutionised motor racing world‐wide, while at Cooper Team. He was a friend and mentor of Bruce McLaren, founder of the iconic McLaren Team.

Now 83 and battling kidney disease, Sir Jack is celebrated as a hero around the world, with surprisingly little recognition here.

Australian Story has unearthed footage not seen in 40 years for “When We Were Racing.”

Brabham is joined by other motor racing icons Sir Stirling Moss, Alan Jones, Murray Walker, Phil Kerr (former manager and friend), Ian Lees (friend and former mechanic) and son Geoffrey Brabham and Lady Margaret Brabham.

It airs 8pm Monday on ABC1 and repeats Tuesday, August 18 at 8pm on ABC2

  1. Thanks for the heads up. I don’t watch Australian Story regularly but I would have regretted missing this episode. What a life this man has lived. To see the progress of his sport must be a constant wonder to him. The man is a true legend and deserves accolades at every opportunity. A true international sporting hero. God help me I love Formula 1!!!
