A rather indescribable clip of footballer Brendan Fevola made its way onto the AFL Footy Show last night.

fev3A rather indescribable clip of footballer Brendan Fevola made its way onto the AFL Footy Show last night. It showed edited moments of Fevola in ‘hi-jinks’ with footballers and guests at the Brownlow Medal for the Street Talk segment.

At various times Fevola was waving a bottle of alcohol in view of the camera as he yelled and cajoled other players.

“He’s an unbelievably kind and generous person, but clearly I think he’s got an issue with the alcohol,” said host Gary Lyon.

“We made a judgement in how much we could show. But as I said, far and away not the worst of it.”

Sam Newman added, “Brendan was over-refreshed let’s be honest. And he would be regretful, he would be disappointed, he would be embarrassed by that. I don’t think he’s murdered anyone…”

At various times the Rod Laver crowd booed and cheered.

On Wednesday a Nine spokesperson was reported as saying footage of Fevola would not appear on the show.

So was the clip a lesson in irresponsible drinking, or irresponsible ratings?

  1. The Footy Show loves pushing the limits and when they go over (and can’t show bits) they still make sure the word gets out and they get media coverage. Footballers get drunk and make fools of themselves – Isn’t that a regular occurance now?

“He’s an unbelievably kind and generous person”. So was Mother Teresa but what’s that got to do with his actions and Nine’s exploitation of it?

  2. Just to clarify, the only booing that came from the crowd was when the host said they wouldn’t show the entire segment. There was never any booing against the behaviour of the guy himself.

Here’s my comment that I left on YouTube – I’m not even an AFL fan so I’m going into this from a purely entertainment point of view…..honestly, I laughed my a*se off watching that 😀

  3. What a dissapointment that Ch 9 chose to air that footage at all.
It just added to the embarrassment that Fevola & his family would’ve felt.
In today’s paper Fevola admits he has a problem.
So, why doesn’t the AFL, Carlton & anyone else in football,
actually do something productive and offer him some help?
Surely that would be the more compassionate thing to do?
(And, no, I’m not a Carlton supporter. I just feel he & anyone in that situation needs help, not more criticism).

  4. Best street talk ever! So he had a bit much to drink! who hasnt? It was funny, look at all the other people around him they were all smiling and laughing as well. Get a life wowsers.

  5. If he had said “I have a poor opinion of China and Asians anyway, so I don’t care” I think you would have seen it as racist and harsh but yes he has taken on board so good on him.

  6. Thought I would catch the clip on YouTube as I don’t watch the Footy Show.
I don’t know what the fuss is about, it was just a bit of harmless fun.
All you can do is just take it with a grain of salt, it’s his life.
Fev isn’t going to care what opinions these complete strangers have of him.

  7. Oops, sorry didn’t want to go down a racist path (being a 5 gen Australian, not that I care about that, just a glorified pom). I was digging at ourselves and pointing out that I want it to change but everything about my culture/way of life says “Nah stuff it, someone elses problem” (which is really bad, so good luck to the few of you who are trying, because you’re really up against it).

  8. @ Ash

Let’s admit that racism is a bad part of anyone’s character, or more specifically your character, and then we can move on to the drinking issue. If you were just trolling: grow up.

  9. @ Ash

You were making sense and a good point but then you said “I have a poor opinion of Australians and Caucasians anyway, so I don’t care”. WTF was that? A stuipd and racist comment that made you look like a total tool and took away from everything else you said. Dumb.

  10. Looks like he had a camera follow him making sure they caught every move. Amazing that with a room full of footballers, no one had the guts to try and stop him (and if they did, you shouldn’t really fail, at least Hird told him he’d had to much). Carlton Administrators, AFL admin, Channel 9…… no one. All just happy to smile and laugh at him progressively get worse.

Why? Because it’s part of our culture. Being a product of the football club culture myself (I love a drink and sometimes, in to much quantity). I know how it’s all done. Watching the Brownlow and the North Melbourne table play drinking games with footballers at home. It’s part of our culture and unless we admit it as a bad part of our character we will never move forward (away from all the poor outcomes an alcohol fuelled society brings).

I have a poor opinion of Australians and Caucasians anyway, so I don’t care.

  11. I got to sit and eat next to the man at a charity lunch last year, and whilst he sank a couple, he was on his best behaviour. Not a Carlton supporter, but he seemed like a good bloke. Definitely irresponsible ratings.

  12. He showed what a complete moron he is. The police will be breathtesting everyone leaving the MCG tomorrow. So the public have to meet a certain standard whilst idiots like Fevola run amok at the Brownlow. If he was a bit player at the Blues he would have been given the chop by now. His partner must be ashamed of him

  13. The crowd were booing the decision to not show the entire segment,
but they’re fans of the show, so their opinion means less than the opinions of outraged talkback callers, who only heard about the segment.

Then there are the people who watch the show weekly with the sole purpose of finding something to be offended about. What pathetic lives some peolpe have.

  14. What a fantastic clip of the FEV, that was classic TV last night on the AFL Footy show, very funny. Actually the whole show was first class, Australian TV at its best. And I normally think channel nine is substandard in general.
