Stars, media and socialites turned out for Sir Michael Parkinson last night in Sydney as he recorded An Evening with Michael Parkinson for the UKTV Channel.
They included Foxtel Director of Television Brian Walsh and BBC Worldwide Australia’s General Manager Tony Iffland (pictured), Lady Sonia McMahon, Kerri-Anne Kennerley, Ricky Ponting, Peter FitzSimons, Lisa Wilkinson, Shane Warne, Marcia Hines, Sarah Wilson, Yumi Stynes, Kyle Linehan, James Tobin, Brendan Moar and Matt Shirvington.
Recorded at the ABC’s Ultimo studios, the special was also attended by several TV critics and journos from the Herald Sun, Daily Telegraph, Sunday Telegraph, the Sydney Morning Herald, AAP, TV Week and MediaWeek.
Parky took the audience through his career and life, remembering his favourite interviews, showing rare clips of interviews with John Lennon, Muhammad Ali, Raquel Welch and more.
Standing up for the full 90 minutes, the legendary interviewer spoke about his upbringing in a mining town, watching old Hollywood movies in the cinema while his mother knitted beside him, and idolising Humphrey Bogart. He reflected on giving The Rolling Stones their first-ever television performance, and showed a bemused audience a prickly interview with the great Kerry Packer.
He also took questions from his celebrity guests, who joined him afterwards for a glass of bubbly.
Following on from his one man stage show, the Freehand production will premiere on UKTV on Sunday December 20th at 7:00pm.

I was at his Brisbane show last weekend and found him quite entertaining. It did turn into a “clip-show” at one stage giving Parky a chance to duck off stage for either a sit down or a drink… David, when you say that it was a “bemused audience” were they like that before the Packer clip or during and as a direct result of it?
Bemused by the Packer clip…
