Late night Timeshifting

Set the PVR and go to bed? If there is any trend in Timeshifted results so far, it is benefitting 'late night' dramas.

Changes to Ratings data are certainly creating new ways to learn how we watch TV, as well as networks finding new ways to canvas their shows to media.

This week both TEN and Seven have drawn upon Consolidated figures to alert media to increases in shows.

House (Jan 31) picked up an extra 144,000 viewers across the week while Brothers and Sisters (Feb 1) netted an additional 72,000.

Timeshifting is still a new dynamic to ratings results, but numbers in a week’s time will be far more interesting when they reflect official survey figures.

If there is any trend emerging so far, it isn’t skewed to a particular network, but to dramas that have ‘late night’ screenings. We’re all happy to set the PVR and go to bed to watch them later.

Here are some figures for shows on Monday February 1st. The biggest proportionate rise was for SBS drama The Fixer, up 29.1%.

  1. What is the point of networks boasting about timeshifted ratings? Very few, if any, people watching these shows on delay would watch the ads so there is little to no good news for advertisers which is ultimately what the networks should be concerned with.

  2. As a couple of “Oldies” we use our PVR every night (‘cos we go to bed at about 9.30) and watch all our late night and other channel favourites the next day. We regularly record 4-5 hrs of programs each night!

  3. Could not live without timeshift and Chase & Play. No more running back from the loo or shouting at the wife to hurry up as she is missing a good bit. Now if we can only get the channels to start at the right time or for them to send a trigger to tell the PVR to record. After all this is the digital age.

  4. I watch everything timeshifted, I record all my shows on the hard drive and watch when I want, and scan past the ads, ads are a thing of the past in my house…

  5. Timeshifting goes back a long, long time, it’s not new, and it is data some of us have known about for years. It is good the unworkable ratings crowd is on to it a last, but still there is a lot of variables they need to strong arm before their system will work. A lot of good programming has been destroyed because the current system can’t and won’t give a true representation of who is watching what and when.
