TEN wants live Friday AFL too

TEN reckons AFL should be live because "that's where consumers expect the code to be."

More pressure on Seven today as TEN matches Channel Nine’s plans to show live Friday night football if it is successful in the next AFL rights bid.

”All rights should be dealt with in a live capacity, because I think that’s where consumers expect the code to be,” CEO Grant Blackley has told The Age.

Asked whether TEN would show Friday night football live, he said: ”Yes, we would.”

Seven’s position so far is it is sticking with Better Homes and Gardens.

  1. The next round of telecast rights could become very good for football/leage fans regardless of which one you support, if the anti-siphoning rules change sufficiently regardless of which code you follow, there is the potential for AFL and NRL to “grow” their game in their non heartlands by insisting that their game be shown live on a secondary channel. AFL to be shown live on ONE in NSW/QLD/ACT and NRL in to VIC/SA/WA/TAS on a secondary channel (seeing Seven seem keen on getting those rights, maybe on 7TWO or if Nine keeps it Go or whatever Nine else has in addition to Go)

There would still be enough games per week for Foxtel to keep their hand in things and not have the free to airs to completely dominate (17 a week across both codes). Obviously this would all be dependent on the anti-siphoning rules changing, but if the govt wants to increase digital takeup, and it’s around the time the analogue switch off is due to commence, then they would be crazy not to allow a little more freedom to show sport on the secondary channels.

imagine football on Go, what would the programmers do having one night a week locked in unable to be changed for almost half a year!

  2. if seven want to stay in the bidding game they better change their mind about showing games delayed now that both 9 and 10 say they will show all Friday night games live, also i really hope the anti-siphoning laws are changed soon to allow game son multi channels.

  3. I nearly fell off my chair…. what a Joke! Channel 10 Delayed the finals series into Brisbane last year because they were worried about ratings… now they’re pushing for Live football. At least 7 allowed Foxtel to show their finals matches on Main Event live into QLD/NSW. 10 were too tight to even do that.

The sooner laws are changed to allow networks to show sport on mutli-channels the better. Should’ve happened at the start of 2009 to coincide with the new channels that were launched.

  4. The sooner they get rid of the anti-siphoning laws the better! Then 7two and ONE can show more afl games live and into non-afl states live, or at a reasonable hr. Also would mean melbourne storm fans could watch nrl on GO instead of at midnight on nine!!!

  5. 7 won’t show the footy live evn if the anti sifoning list is changed. their policy won’t change now that 9 and 10 are thinking ahead of time. this is why the people that run 7 are a bunch of moron when it comes to sport

  6. @johnjet

Exactly. Im a Melburnian and i find it an insult to SA and WA. Both states are as footy mad as Victorians, and to have games live in Vic, but not in SA and WA shows neglect. In this day an age where you can get live footy results on the radio or the net, TV needs to follow. Sport – in this case AFL – has gotta be live everywhere! Not just to one part of the universe. If TEN are going to show it live, they gotta stick in on ONE so its live nationally and that it doesnt interupt its state News bulletins in WA, Neighbours and that rediculous 7PM project.

Seven wont show it live. They wont even show Sunday football live. They got to at least show their Sunday match live nationally (i mean…what else is there to watch on Sunday daytime) to prove they have some commitment to broadcasting games live. Then Seven and the AFL should publically pressure the government to allow games to broadcast on 7TWO nationally so their Friday Night live telecast into WA and SA will not be interupted by News, TT, H&A and BH&G.

Going live nationally will also mean going live into NSW and Qld, which will be necessary to grow the sport into Rugby League heartland.

  7. Are Ten and Seven still contractually obliged to bid for the AFL together? If so why don’t they just switch nights ie. Friday nights for Ten with live games; and Saturday for Seven where there is no regular programming (apart from Seven News) to interfere with them going live with games.

  8. I don’t see why Seven can’t just give the Friday Night and Sunday Afternoon games To Ten and they show the Saturday Afternoon and Night games. This means they can keep the punter’s happy and also keep BH&G in the Friday slot. Also will Ten’s plans include Brisbane and Sydney.

  9. It sucks that Seven get away with the Friday night games and don’t air them live. I don’t watch AFL but I would love to see these games move to Ten – would fill their weekend schedule quite nicely I think.

  10. I agree with Jed about Ten/One showing all the AFL games. Pre-2002 one commercial network (Seven) had all the free-to-air rights, and with Ten already having a second dedicated sports channel (One), they have the capacity to broadcast most (if not all) games live – assuming they have the resolve to do so. It would result in more consistent coverage, and as a bonus viewers would have a McAvaney free AFL coverage.

But as Jed points out, Ten may not have the financial clout to go head to head with Seven in a bidding war. The AFL need to do the right thing by the codes fans and consider more than just the bottom line dollar figure when the time comes to award the new rights. Of course Foxtel will doubtless also be eager to get in on the action.

  11. That’s what I want, more live AFL on FTA. Especially Friday nights – it’s bizarre that games in Melbourne (and most Friday night games are in Melbourne) aren’t shown live interstate.

  12. Excellent just give Ten the rights to show all AFL games. They’re the only ones that do it properly anyway. Seven won’t show it live, and Nine’s commentators are the worst, so i’d love to see Ten have Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Then we can get replays also on ONE. Problem is, they don’t have the money.

  13. Nine has the rights to NRL, they should opt to show more live NRL games instead of delaying it. I hate watching a close game and then sports tonights telling me the score anyway. If Nine keep treating the NRL like crap they should pass it on to Seven, they do better in the sydney market and NRL is a NSW based game. Only then should they even bother bidding for the AFL.
    Their in financial ruin anyway.
