Exactly one year ago today Charles Tingwell wrapped on his final television role in the ABC’s Bed of Roses.
‘Bud’, as he was affectionately known by both industry and viewers, kept working right until the end.
His final performance was a short film, indicative of his legendary support of the Australian industry. It was made just before his death on May 15th 2009.
Fittingly, he received a State Funeral attended by family, industry, government, friends and fans.
His final television role airs 7:30pm this Saturday on ABC1.

Great episode. He’ll be missed. I first saw him in Catweazle, when I was a little kid.
I think Bed of Roses must have filmed around a few sick days. A couple of eps back, you don’t get a good view of Bud (only from the back, in the distance or in shadow) and his voice calling from inside the house (as the voiceover had been added later).
You could see that he was very frail, very sad. All the best Bud.
*The* legend of Australian TV. And it says a lot about how dedicated and talented he was that we’re still seeing his work, since he never seemed to even vaguely consider retiring. What a perfect tribute to the man that he’s still on TV in a first-run show nearly a year after he passed away.
I met ‘Bud’ a few years ago during his national speaking tour. A very interesting man and a wonderful Sunday arvo. I have a signed autobiography to remember him by.
