O’Loughlin gag “was a throwaway line”

Fiona O'Loughlin says her Bindi Irwin joke was a throwaway line as a part of banter on a comedy panel show.

Fiona O’Loughlin has responded to an article in yesterday’s Herald Sun which harshly called her an ‘alcoholic comedienne’ and criticised her jokes about Bindi Irwin on Spicks and Specks.

She said it was a throwaway line as a part of banter on a comedy panel show.

“Bindi has been operating in the public domain for years now, and material about her sometimes appears in my shows along with other people you know (and some you don’t). I’m as much a target as Bindi is and have been the recipient of all kinds of remarks and jokes for years – just like anyone in the public eye is a target for comedians and commentators.”

  1. I think Bindi has not really been around normal people, in her young life.
She has always been the center of attention and people have always treated her differently.

  2. It was funny and the crowd loved it. Most people knee-jerkingly commenting on it (as is the case with most of these comedy outrages) probably didn’t even see the show. Harden up.

  3. @john It didn’t read as a joke. Kind of how Fiona – who on TV was clearly joking – got into this situation in the first place. Oh, also, not funny.

  4. Oh the outrage machine keeps rolling on in 2010, what Hungry Beast subjects on Intersex People and Labiaplasty too real to write informative articles on instead, so lets go to the gutter and publish that tripe.

Bindi Irwin is getting no less or more than what Nikki Webster copped 10 years ago, it is part of a cycle when someone is that much in the public eye and put up as glowing example.

No harm no fowl … journalists go and find real issues to talk about and perpetuate healthy debates about real issues.

  5. Accurate and oh please, let’s not make jokes about someone in the public domain. I would guess that most of those people who called the ABC or emailed don’t even watch Spicks and Specks or just do waiting for something to write a letter about.

Why did the Irwin’s need to be contacted for comment?

So, every comment made about everyone needs to be run past the actual subject.

Oh the Herald is really after pages with this one.

Fiona is a comedienne. It’s what funny people do and thank god they keep doing it.

John: I suggest you take back your comment as it really is below the belt.

  6. Lighten up people. It was funny. And Bindi Irwin is getting rich off having a famous parent. This kinda stuff comes with the territory of being in the limelight. Fiona is not the first to make jokes about Bindi nor will she be the last. Sometimes it seems like people look for excuses to be outraged.

  7. John, she’d never say it herself, but she’s given up so much of her time, effort and money for a lot of kids in the Aboriginal community where she lives. As she said, it’s a throwaway line, she wouldn’t actually hit a child. Pretty disgusting that you would make such hurtful comments.

  8. OK for the record: watched it, laughed, moved on.

What interested me more is that I was revolted by the “alcoholic comedienne” reference (was it really comedienne David? How un-PC!) and went back to read the context only to find it has been removed from the online article. What happened there? The comments note that it was removed during the day.
