Legal questions hover over Underbelly 3

Former NSW policewoman Wendy Hatfield is appealing a court ruling that denied her access to the Nine series.

In a scene reminiscent of Underbelly in 2007, there are still court cases hovering over Nine’s new gangster series.

Former NSW policewoman Wendy Hatfield is appealing a court ruling that denied her access to the Nine series, following claims the book Underbelly: The Golden Mile had defamed her.

Nine has not confirmed a role in the series played by Jessica Tovey, known as ‘Constable Wendy’ is based on her. Hatfield denied she had a sexual relationship with King’s Cross entrepreneur John Ibrahim.

Nine claims there are several roles in the series that are an amalgalm of characters. Network insiders note that providing access to material before it has aired could set a dangerous precedent -the court hasn’t prevented Ms. Hatfield from mounting a legal case after it airs.

The network has not indicated if it will edit scenes with ‘Constable Wendy.’

When asked about the scripting process of Underbelly: The Golden Mile, writer and producer Greg Haddrick declined to comment to TV Tonight, citing pending legal cases.

Underbelly returns 8:30pm next Sunday night.
