TEN “jumped the gun” on Biggest Loser 6

TEN called for new Biggest Loser contestants without a final deal in place for the show, according to an article today.

Last week TEN called for families of four to enter the sixth season of The Biggest Loser.

But according to rights-holder Shine Australia, TEN is yet to sign a final deal for the show.

“TEN jumped the gun somewhat making that announcement”, a Shine source tells TV Week today.

“While it isn’t our intention to move the franchise, a formal agreement has yet to be struck.”

The source also claims Shine is “at odds” with TEN’s programming of the show at 7:30pm instead of its traditional 7pm.

This year was the show’s lowest performance across its five seasons, despite a new host and new twists.

Shine Australia, which resumes the rights from FremantleMedia Australia, is said to be considering fewer episodes and a new location.

Earlier this year managing director Carl Fennessy said the show was part of a bidding war with other networks but later claimed the comment had been reported out of context.

“Some comments I made insinuated there would be a bidding war for The Biggest Loser, but it was taken out of context. TEN wants to retain the brand and support it, and they’ve been great partners. There has been interest elsewhere and we’ve had some discussions, but we’re not shopping the format around as such,” he told Encore.

The show is currently calling for 2011 participants on TEN’s website.

  1. maybe it’s time to put it to rest. the people that have the rights to this seem to be thinking that. it’s had day and now it’s time for it to be put out to pasture

  2. Do they really need a “Family Series”? Why don’t they just go back to the blue and red teams, no couples or relations or anything. And maybe bring Bob and Jilian back in some way.

  3. I think this years series – apart from the epic finale – needed some dumbing down. Enough with the constant change of game rules, teams, people going away in secret etc. Have 15 people, each week one leaves until theres 3 or 4 left and have the finale.

  4. they definately cannot do the 6 night format again. the only thing worse than a flop is a flop that runs 6 nights a week. they should do a 2 night format like the US version and axe SYTYCDA, any night that goes on will be a disaster night for ten.

shine is in a spot of concern, the rating will probably drop again next year which will make very low numbers. some which will look bad on shine’s part even though there is not much they can do.

  5. This year’s series was a bloated, boring mess. Shine has every right to be concerned about their brand because if things aren’t changed I can’t see it going beyond next year.

  6. I just don’t bother watching any of these so-called “reality” shows. They bore me to tears, and there are plenty of other alternatives on the airwaves.

  7. Can we please rest this show already, I hate it in its current format / time slot? I know some people probably love it still, as I did series 1 and 2. As they say, absence makes the heart grow fonder, as I’m sure Big Brothers rating will pick up whenever it returns…

  8. Oh lovely, they are going to flood the airwaves with this, again. No sooner do we thankfully get rid of big brother, then it’s replaced with something almost as annoying.
