TEN: Second entertainment channel

TEN has confirmed it will launch a general entertainment channel in the second half of the year.

TEN has confirmed it will launch a general entertainment channel in the second half of the year.

The new channel is expected to have a unique name, but TEN has not indicated what programming will appear on it.

To launch sometime after June 30, the channel will not be built on repeating shows that debuted on the main TEN signal.

“It will be a general entertainment channel,” David Mott has told The Australian. “It’s got to be original.”

The channel also won’t be treated like a poor sibling of TEN.

“It will have equal weighting with TEN. In the digital environment, why wouldn’t you?”

TEN has been hit hard by the arrival of 7TWO and GO!, which pick up audiences similar to that of SBS. While TEN has had ONE on air for more than a year, it has struggled to compete with the channels playing broad, international TV.

Meanwhile Nine’s second digital multi-channel would not be launched until after July.

Seven has confirmed it is also planning a second multi-channel for this year, although the format and timing are not known.

Networks are also awaiting the outcome of the Anti-Siphoning List review which could allow them to play more sports on digital multi-channel.

  1. While they are at it, reinstate local weekend news, local news on national public holidays and invest in a new set for Brisbane.

As for the multi-channel, move The Circle there.

@steven_guy: I think Nine has Star Trek rights…

  2. I would really like to see the last season of Veronica Mars on this new channel as I have still have not seen the last 18 episodes.

I also to see Smallville from season 8 onwards.

  3. This was to be expected but I like the fact it is going to have its own name and ident in similar fashion to Go I hope it stands as its own network rather than something like 7Two which is a poor sibiling of Channel 7.

  4. What;s the bet they will move 7pm Project over to it and perhaps bring back a Big Brother type of show for it.

If they are smart they will pick up or play shows like The Office, In Plain Sight, Outrageous Fortune, Chelsea Lately and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.

  5. Ok now I’m pissed!! I live in Griffith, NSW and we don’t get any of the extra Win/Prime channels (7TWO, GO!, PRIMEHD, WINHD) or Ten and its extra (One HD) and now their planning on launching even more! Here’s an idea…get the entire country on the same level before you go and get any bigger!!

  6. The Channel would be popular if it screened classic Australian soaps, such as Neighbours: The Early Years, Prisoner, E STreet, Echo Point, just too name a few.
If 7two can air classic like Home And Away: The Early Years, and Sons and daughters, why cant the The New Ten channel.

  7. Hopefully they allocate some airtime for classic Australian Television. Dig out classics from the archives. Game Shows, soaps, dramas, kids shows, lots of 70s, 80s and 90s Australian retro TV please.

  8. Considering it is likely to replace One SD (which is on LCN 11), and given the fact that One is on LCN 1, what’s the bet the new channel will be called Eleven? 😛

  9. smallville needs to turn up somewhere, I don’t care what channel but it is the main thing missing since we lost 10HD. friday night lights and eureka have found late night time slots and we never did get to see the end of battlestar galactica did we, I rented it ages ago but still it deserves some kind of airing.

  10. So will 7 and 9 be starting these new channels using the HD air space?
If so you would like to see documentary and perhaps movie channels, no?

  11. “…the channel will not be built on repeating shows that debuted on the main TEN signal.”
Does this mean that nothing that has been shown on TEN will be shown on the new channel or just that repeats won’t be? Because I think that with Supernatural’s (unfortunately) low ratings that showing Season 6 might not be possible on Ten but it could be on their new channel.
