Adam Liaw wins MasterChef 2010

Adam Liaw has won the MasterChef 2010 title over his fellow South Australian Callum Hann.

31 year old Adelaide lawyer Adam Liaw has won MasterChef Australia 2010.

He beat fellow South Australian Callum Hann, 20, for the title.

Adam scored 89 points while Callum scored 82 points.

“I’m over the moon. I just can’t believe it. It hasn’t sunk in yet,” he said.

The first challenge was a Basic Skills Test that required them to name a range of ingredients, dice vegetables and whip up an Omlette. Callum’s youth saw him unable to name as many foods as Adam, but he did pick up on the vegetable test. Adam was the clear winner in cooking an Omlette.

By the end of Round One Callum had 13 points to Adam’s 17 points.

Round Two was a 3 way Invention Test before Celebrity Chef Matt Moran, that showcased three cooking techniques. Adam chose to work with Pork Belly while Callum selected Chicken. Callum was ambitious with his dishes, while Adam was branded a “Pork Master” by his teammates.

The judges were blown away by Adam’s dishes. “I take my hat off to you budy, you are a serious cook,” said Moran. But they were equally delighted by Callum’s dish.

“That sauce is liquid gold. It’s brilliant,” said Calombaris.

Callum scored 36 points taking him to 49 points. Adam also scored 36 points taking him to 53 points.

The final round was a Pressure Test dubbed “the hardest dish we have ever had.” It was a a guava and custard apple snow egg dessert from Quay’s Peter Gilmore.

Callum raced ahead of Adam but didn’t quite cook up enough meringue excess to cover any mistakes. Adam remained calm on an intricate dish despite almost fumbling the blowtorching element.

Both served up excellent dishes, with Moran telling Callum he liked the dish more than Gilmore’s sweeter original. Adam was nervous in presenting his dessert but the judges were complimentary on his flavours.

Callum scored 33 points taking him to 82 points. Adam scored 36 points taking him to a winning total of 89 points.

The finale also included the appearance of chefs from across the series including Maggie Beer, Luke Nguyen, Donna Hay and 2009 winner Julie Goodwin. Families of the two also celebrated their success.

Adam’s prize package includes $100,000 and a publishing deal.

Hann was rewarded with a scholarship at Calombaris restaurants for 3 months and $10,000.

TEN also launched its first Junior MasterChef promo with talented 8 – 12 year olds cooking up eye-popping dishes. Get ready to have your taste buds tempted all over again.

  1. Great result in the end Adam will be a culinary superstar without doubt. Callum will be a solid chef as well and now has a good start.

JMC looks brilliant even though those kids could become Fifth Grader annoying i reckon!

  2. The junior version will be a hit. At one stage, “Junior Masterchef” was the #1 Twitter trend in the world.

If that ain’t proof, that it may do well, even actually come back for a second season, especially with those kids cooking dishes that adults are impressed at, then what is these days?

  3. Great result for a great show.. i would have prefered to see Marion amd jonathon in the final .. however.. it was great viewing… I don’t think i can wait another year…!!!!

  4. Congrats Adam, thought he’d win and deserved it a bit more than Callum, but both have been my favourites, and both South Australian so was great to see. Callum’s prize as runner up was just as good though, getting a job with George.

Junior Masterchef actually looks quite good. As much as kids are bloody annoying, i’m guessing these kids must have a bit of maturity and respect to cook like that, so i’ll be watching.

  5. I’ve already gone into Chef mourning. 6 days out of 7 now gone….had a downer last year but now its gonna be worse. MC stuck to their brand, their great positive messages and even tho more commercial this year, i hardly noticed. George, Gary, Matt. Please come and stay with me for 10 months…sob!

  6. Adam is a gun. He and Marion should have a TV show together. I hope junior mc is not going to suffer from the viewer fatigue factor that celebrity mc endured last year. Loved every second of this year’s season but it’s time for a break. Don’t overload us with spinoffs or the whole thing will jump the shark sooner than it should.

  7. brilliant show, cant wait for next year…will give jnr masterchef a miss, I dont need to see 10 year olds that are better at cooking than I am!

  8. I question the scores on the last dish, because it seemed to me they liked Callum’s more.

But no matter, Adam is certainly a more deserving winner, and Callum has a hell of a future ahead of him. There were no losers in this final.

  9. Such a good show!! Gonna miss it for another year….

Loved both Callum and Adam! So awesome Callum got that scholarship with George too who clearly loves him.

  10. i wanted Callum to win but it may be better than he didnt because he will probaly do better than adam will

junior mc looks intresting while the parents would be as proud as ever i bet a few of them would be a bit envious that there kids cook better than they do

  11. Congratulations to Adam, hes a legend! Deserved it, and cooked better on tonights show than Callum did. It was a spectacular finale, well done to TEN!

    Junior MC looks amazing.

  12. Any idea what the TV scheduling is for “Junior Masterchef”? I saw the premiere advert tonight and well, those kids make me look like the worst cook ever! LOL
