Gruen, Spicks, Chaser top Wednesday ratings

Australia votes Gruen Nation #1 with a record breaking 1.6m viewers, as ABC comedies land the top 3 shows on TV last night.

ABC comedies were the top rated shows on Wednesday night.

Gruen Nation topped the night with 1.6m viewers, the best figure for any ABC show this year. It was also the best ever figure for the Gruen team.

It was followed by Spicks and Specks with 1.5m.

In third place was Yes We Canberra! also just under 1.5m viewers.

Aside from their News and Public Affairs offerings, the best the others could muster was World’s Strictest Parents (1.27m), The Farmer Wants a Wife (1.19m) and The 7PM Project (943,000).

Nine won the night in network shares.

  1. I thought Gruen were a bit soft on John Hewson, though. When the section came up about his embarrassing moments on the campaign trail, was assuming they’d play the infamous Mike Willesee ACA interview where Hewson tied himself up in absolute knots trying to explain GST payable on a birthday cake … it was political death in slow motion. But no, we watched him catch an egg at a rally and have a bit of argy bargy with Keating!

  2. I thought the last season of the Chaser was just dreadful, but last nights return was hilarious, they have always done their best work with a backdrop of an election. Hopefully though, it doesnt inspire them to return to the war, it was ruined.

  3. @ franz I think they were pulling in about 700k, but this was TEN back when it was a safe third, and verging upon fourth, now, even though MasterChef is over, there is still some of it’s shine there, I mean 3.5m viewers watching the promos for a show is always good.

It’s likei n the US, how CBS shows increased about 15% in the week following the Superbowl. I predict that in a fortnight, 7pm Project will be back down to 600k, and which is why I support repeats of recycled American sitcoms, because I’m sure it costs more to produce 1 episode of the 7pm Project, than it costs to repeat a sitcom.

  4. The 7pm project deserves to do well.943000 is not too bad.I would like to see what Ten were getting in the past with their old recycled American sitcom imports.

  5. 7pm project still above 900,000 without master chef is i reckon a pretty good achievement – especially as new Simpsons didn’t carry all of the numbers that it was delivered. I think 7pm project has found its core audience – more or less – it mightn’t scale the seven figure rating too often – but it is performing admirably.
I don’t think i;ve ever seen 3 ABC shows take the top 3 possies. Has it ever?

  6. Last night’s Chaser Election show had the look and feel of an undergraduate rehearsal. I was embarrassed for them (more so for Tony Jones). What happened?

    1. Thanks for advising of the Farmer typo gang. Posted that as I dashed out the door to a media function as the news was so good I wanted to get it up quick smart. too much quick not enough smart.

  7. Great result for ABC, and the replays tonight should help boost their weekly ratings even more. Also great to see the 7PM stay in the 900k+ range post Masterchef.

  8. Good to have Wednesday nights back to ABC-larious… Thoroughly enjoyed GN and YWC (especially the fake tweets!).

Are we going to see live tweets on DWTS, live sport (AFL), the News? I like ABC Q and Q’s usage of them (they pick relatively clever ones or ones which make an excellent point), however the calibre of tweets chosen my the dimwits at Nine during the debate were apauling…

  9. The Chasher was one of the funniest things i have seen for a long time, and right after Gruen nation and spicks and specks, didnt have to change the channel all night
