Foxtel is increasing the price of its basic package and dropping the price of HD channels from November 1st.
The price change is time to coincide with the launch of extra channels.
The new channels are MTV Hits, MTVN Live & SPEED, as well as four additional High Definition channels – MTVN Live HD, SPEED HD, BBC Knowledge HD, Nat Geo Wild HD; and dedicated 3D channel – Foxtel 3D.
Yesterday it announced On Demand Internet TV service with additional fees to accress TV and Movies via the internet. But it will replace some offerings that had been available.
A spokesperson told TV Tonight, “This comprehensive pay per view service replaces the existing Foxtel Box Office service and therefore customers who previously received Box Offices movies as part of their package will no longer get these.
“As a result of these additions to the Foxtel service we have adjusted the price of some of our packages, meaning that while some customers will experience a modest price increase, other customers’ packages will remain the same price or even decrease.”
New prices are available here.

Not a shock.
I’d prefer TCM moving to basic rather than MTV
“They are like the telstra of the television world”. Matt, there’s a very good reason for that!
MTV has moved to the basic package.
(sorry to cut in) David, when I tried to cancel they offered me the 10 dollar package and the 6 channels were set by them (can’t remember exactly but I think they were all from the getting started package…I can remember it had the ‘comedy channel’ in the selection and nothing especially great)…I said no and left it at that, saying I’d rather just cancel my subscription, but a day later they phoned and offered me the entire platinum hd pack , which I had started on(usually 130 cahoonas) for $70 for 6 months which sounded fairly reasonable (That’s about the price they should be charging in the first place!!!) . I should point out I’m not on a contract so I can drop out whenever I like and will as soon as the six months are up, unless they offer me another spiffy deal, of course.
I recently called Foxtel to cancel so they offered me a special $10 deal with a limited package of 6 channels. I’ll stick with that at the moment but with the new FTA channels and internet TV available I don’t think Foxtel is much of a business these days and into the future.
Did you get to choose the 6?
A number of readers have often said they were offered cheaper plans when they rang to cancel.
With the recent resurrection of Gordon Gekko’s character, it looks like Foxtel have adopted his personal mantra of ‘greed is good’.
I am on platinum, and although my letter said no price increase, Foxtel are taking away my 2 box office movies per month that are included in the package. so isnt that effectively a price increase – as i will now be paying for box office?
does this effect those on contract already? or is the pricing for those on contract now safe until renewal? Odd thing i found is, Selectv is stopping its service november 15th, and foxtel offered specials to entice people to transfer over. Now Foxtel is charging more for its basics the same month Selectv goes out of business. There goes affordable subscription television. They are like the telstra of the television world
The least they could do was keep prices them same whilst adding more to the service, having consumers find out that the starting price is getting close to $50 a month isn’t going to make them want to subscribe.
@Paul – Austar slightly changed their pricing as of September 30th 2010
Thanks Foxtel for finally helping to make my mind up. I’m cancelling your service Monday morning!
I’m on Austar, does that mean my costs will go up soon as well?
And what about making Discovery (the non HD one) 16×9, I mean serious how hard is it for them to down scale it? Also while they are at it ET on Arena is still not 16×9, so are a few other shows which claim to be ‘HD’ I know with Ellen they had to upgrade some equipment for the closed captions to be captured from the US but why can’t they do the same for the other shows on Arena and W?
And still nothing for Austar. No new HD channels and no price reduction.
We don’t even get all the current HD channels . I hate not having a choice.
Hi David, do you know if Austar will increase their prices as well?
Want more subscribers – offer all free to air digital channels, whether cable or satellite.
Foxtel price increases- no surprise there.
I totally agree with Russel. Foxtel also better watch out as FetchTV is starting to also look very enticing.
@Russell agree 100%, and with interest rates likely to go up next week, expect a mass exodus, and rightfully so, why would they even dream of raising prices when the public has a huge choice on FTA now
For people who are limited with foxtel options, it kinda sucks. I am stuck with a standard non IQ box because my apartment building is cabled for foxel satellite with only one point in each apartment. So I dont have an option to upgrade to IQ/IQ2, or even multiroom. So all these improvements do not benefit me at all.
I’m on the HD + everything except Movie Network channels package… Got a letter last week saying my package was dropping by $1 per month! $1! They wasted ink and paper to tell me I’d be saving $1. LOL, what a joke. 😉
the link doesn’t work 🙁
Will Disney Channel Join Basic?
Fixed.
has foxtel got no shame
David – you have a double http:// in the link.
They still don’t have a basic HD pack, which I think they should, let people feel the difference in the IQ2 box, and they’ll probably end up getting a higher end package later (or maybe not).
Now that there are 15 free channels on Freeview, Foxtel need to be dropping prices not raising them.
