TEN drops religious show over gay comments

TEN has stopped airing US show Believer's Voice of Victory after comments on homosexuality were deemed out of step with the Industry Code of Practice.

TEN recently advised US Ministry Kenneth Copeland it would not be renewing its contract for the Believer’s Voice of Victory after a broadcast in June discussing homosexuality.

Copeland said: “… the reason God condemned homosexuality is because of the severe attack it has on the fabric of the blessing, life, all that God created.”

In response evangelical minister David Barton agreed, referring to the Bible: “….not only does God not approve homosexuality, it says He does not approve those who approve homosexuality …”

Following a complaint, TEN deemed the broadcast as out of step with the Industry Code of Practice.

It notified the organisation that a program “should not provoke or perpetuate intense dislike, serious contempt or severe ridicule against a person or group of persons on the grounds of age, colour, gender, national or ethnic origin, disability, race, religion or sexual preference.”

It stopped broadcasting the show in mid-September. The programme still airs in regional areas on Southern Cross Media and WIN and on the Australian Christian Channel on Pay TV.

On its website Kenneth Copeland says it is seeking legal advice and says “We are winners because Jesus is Lord and God is our source.”

Prior to his conversion to Christianity in 1962 Copeland was a music recording artist.

  1. WIN? The only religious programs they air come straight from Nine. Unless you mean the regional SA stations? But I thought they were just direct late night feeds of TEN & Seven Adelaide anyway?

But yes, the Southern Cross Ten network (now including TDT & DDT) go outta their way to show even more religious programming than TEN metro. Thus, cutting The CBS Early Show to regional viewers.

  2. As much as I dislike the extreme Christian shows that appear at these ‘ungodly’ hours – I utilise my freedom and do not watch. They may spout attitudes we do not like – but Barton’s views are pretty clearly describing parts of the Bible. Copeland’s comments could be twisted to represent a call to arms against a group (“severe attack”) but that is a long bow.
I reckon TEN’s over stepped here using the Code of Practice as the excuse to cancel a show they might not want anymore. The only people who are going to be happy about this are the extremists who will say they’re under attack and the lawyers.

  3. And there’s a big difference between disagreeing with someone’s lifestyle and hating them because of it.

For example, if you had a teenage son who got into drugs… You probably would disagree with their choices, to say the least, but that doesn’t mean you hate them or love them any less.

    Anyway moving on…

  4. @Gee Gee – You’re only assuming that they “hate” homosexuals, therefore your argument is based on your biased (for whatever reason) opinion of theirs, not based on what you know to be fact (about their opinion). Not once in their conversation did they say anything related to hating anyone – they were simply discussing their interpretation on what a passage of the Bible indicates. Doesn’t mean they are full of hatred. Doesn’t make them wrong or even right. Watch the full video on their website as I did after reading this article before jumping to conclusions.

  5. Very good move 10. About time these christians embraced love and tolerance instead of hate.

Funny that many people who are religious are the least spiritual people around. I’m a spiritual person but I embrace a more universal divinity that is about love and enlightenment not bigotry and hatred.

  6. Can Ch 10 axe “Hillsong” as well?. The show & ‘organisation’ goes well over the way over-extreme christianity is stuffed down our throats. churches have no right to have control with all form of government.

Religious TV shows show more respsect for increased profits, that preaching the gsopels. If a church’s building of worship is as big an entertainment complex, it becomes more concerning.

  7. Good move TEN – now also do the same to James Robison and Benny Hinn. Both of those shows also encourage discrimination against gays and anyone else who doesn’t fit into their self-righteous bibicial view of the world.

  8. It never fails to amaze how some preachers can twist the words of the bible to feed into their own hatred.

At least Ch 10 showed some taste in dropping his insignificant show – we could do less with the likes of him that’s for sure.

  9. And of course Ten would Neverair a program in which a person or character suggests that the teachings of the Bible are fictional, or makes fun of a Christian for their beliefs. Of course not….

    Hypocrites.

  10. Good on Channel 10. Those sort of comments are an embarrassment both to a mostly secular society such as Australia, but also to majority of Christians in this country who are moderates.

  11. Amazing how a person can still use the bible written by man as an excuse for their dislikes

Wonder what he feels about fat people – is this caused by the devil – wasnt he created by the church to bring people back into the fold

  12. Great news Ten… now if we could only get rid of this from Pay TV. I don’t know why I have to pay for this hatred to be brought into my house as the ACC is on the basic package and Foxtel won’t remove it even if you ask them to do so.

  13. Seems kind of bias seeming they have cut out many homo-sexual things, such as kissing, on neighbours and cut out a lesbain wedding and kiss on the last episode out of the blue….
