Chef Jamie Oliver will launch a Ministry of Food Australia scheme in Queensland, teaching locals how to cook and eat more healthily -but so far there are no plans to turn it into a TV series.

Oliver won over critics and fans when he set out to improve British school lunches in a 2005 television series and then followed up with a Ministry of Food campaign to teach people how to cook healthier food. TEN has already aired versions in Australia.

The campaign will make its debut in Queensland, where the government committed up to $2.5 million over four years to battle obesity.

“Ipswich definitely needs our help,” Oliver said. “I can’t wait to get there.”

“These cooking classes are fun, produce delicious food from fresh ingredients and really take the fear out of cooking.”

  1. Obesity is the result of many things – mostly lifestyle choices brought about by ignorance and convenience, Not every person is an emotional eater. If you are brought up on take away because it is cheap and easy then the cycle is more than likely to repeat because you don’t know any different. And then your children won’t know any different. And so on.
The Ministry of Food is about breaking that cycle through education for those that more than likely wouldn’t put themselves out there for classes that are already available. The meals provided in the UK series are were nutritious, affordable and accessible to the people they were developed for. It was about informing people that providing home cooked meals for your family isn’t a chore nor is it expensive. The Ministry of Food initiative is about families, not schools.
Jamie Oliver is a very busy man who is passionate about 2 things – food and people. If he is willing to take time out of his very busy life to educate Australians about healthy eating at his own expense without the bonus publicity of at TV series – then I say let him.

  2. I don’t know that it is really necessary, it’s not like there aren’t cooking classes readily available to those who want them. Masterchef has made people far more interested in cooking and putting in effort, there is plenty of info out there about eating healthy and more and more fast food places are offering healthier options. Our schools have tuckshops that provide food but in my experience unlike in America the vast majority of kids bring a packed lunch to school, tuckshop is only used heavily by some students with most of them only having it every so often. So if something is wrong with the kids lunches it is the parents responsibility unlike the schools in america where everyone is fed by the school. There is still an obesity problem but I think it might be more psychological than environmental, not that I’m any kind of expert. This seems to be becoming about franchising Jamie Oliver cooking classes more than fixing a problem, whose to say he can do it any better than other learn to cook healthy classes.
