Neighbours Scriptwriter Training Initiative

Now in its fourth year, the Neighbours Scriptwriter Training Initiative is a rare opportunity for emerging writers.

The Australian Writers’ Guild and FremantleMedia Australia are once again giving two writers the opportunity to spend 6 weeks within the writing team of Neighbours as part of its annual Neighbours Scriptwriter Training Initiative.

Now in its fourth year, the initiative is one of the few opportunities for emerging writers to attach to a working production. Several of the internships have resulted in permanent positions.

Applications are invited from both new writers and those who have experience in other areas of performance writing.

For more information visit awg.com.au

Applications close 26 November 2010.

  1. It’s important to remember the difficulty in writing 2 and 1/2 hours of television a week that balances over 25 characters short and long term storylines. Furthermore, Neighbours is a soap opera intended for specific audience demographics. It is also a G-rated television program which in itself limits the traditional storylines that occupy the soap opera genre.

These ongoing challenges are important skills for new writers to learn no matter your personal verdict on the end product.

  2. Must agree with you David; sadly, I already surmised with all the knockers out there, that there would be mainly negative comments posted for this story.

  3. How about we get all the writers of Australian drama to be mentored by the truly great writers of classic shows like A Country Practice and that era.

The first thing they would learn is the creation of characters you actually care about. People still remember the death of Molly Jones, but I’ve already forgotten whoever it was that died on Rafters the other night.

  4. Getting work experience from new writers, I think the current Neighbours writers should get work experience from Rush and Packed to the Rafter writers before they poison new writers with the ‘Bad Rating Show because of bad writers’ disease

    1. Must say I am amazed that a show goes to the trouble of providing new opportunities for emerging writers and some people see this as a negative. Previously people have criticised shows for sticking with the same writers.

  5. I remember bout 10 years ago when i was 15 i was on a train in melbourne and a sposed neighbours writer came to me and my friends and asked us if we had any good ideas…. starting to belive he was the real deal 🙂

  6. I was lucky enough to do this in 2008 and it is well worth it!

Being in the writers room is fantastic, guiding the lives of the residents of Ramsey St. While I was there I helped plot a teen pregnancy, the lead up to a wedding and, at the time, The Death of Harold Bishop….

You will get a great insight into how a serial drama is run and written – ALot of hard work goes into the show, ALot People that write Neighbours off really don’t appreciate the time and stress it takes to pump our 2 1/2 hours of drama a week whilst juggling shooting and acotr schedules.

Very much worth the time and effort to scare a place for 6 weeks…

  7. Giving new writers a break is nice, and worthy behaviour, but I think Neighbours needs to focus on improving itself at the moment, rather than this kind of thing.
