True Stories: The Exorcist

Religion vs. science as this doco traces the real-life case which was the inspiration for a classic film.

Fans of The Exorcist might want to catch this US doco that traces the real-life case which was the inspiration for the film.

This is a debate over religion vs. science.

Either way it was still a helluva film.

The Exorcist was one of the most successful horror movies of all time, grossing almost half a billion dollars at the box office. Based on a real-life exorcism in 1949 in Maryland, USA, the movie is about a priest who claimed to have exorcised a demon from a thirteen-year-old boy whose family reported poltergeist activity. The ordeal lasted almost four months, with various priests reporting that the boy spoke in Latin, claimed to be a demon, and displayed ‘superhuman’ strength.

Using the diary kept by one of the priests, True Stories investigates the disturbing ordeal the young boy went through. The documentary also explores the increase in exorcisms following the film’s release, using actual footage of a modern day exorcism, and explores the work of a leading neuroscientist who has used magnetic field technology to reproduce the sensation of ‘possession’ in normal people.

It airs 9:25pm Wednesday, 24 November on ABC2.

  1. You realise that this is a documentary not the fictional movie, right?

I wonder how well researched this is, as ABC doco buy ins have been a bit patchy of late (dubious “reality”shows with little fact content).
