Ricky Gervais: “I’m not sorry”

"They hired me for a job and if they didn't want me, they shouldn't have hired me," says a defiant Ricky Gervais.

“I’m sorry if they were offended but I’m not sorry for anything I said. They hired me for a job and if they didn’t want me, they shouldn’t have hired me,” Ricky Gervais said of his now-controversial Golden Globes hosting.

The UK comedian was speaking to CNN’s latest recruit, Piers Morgan.

“Just because you’re offended does not mean you’re in the right. A lot of people are offended by mixed marriages – it doesn’t mean they are right,”

“I’m not going to apologise for being true to myself. My strategy is to make me laugh. If there’s anyone in the world like me, that’s a bonus.”

When asked if he was mocking the exploits of people like Charlie Sheen he  told Morgan the gags were based on incidents that were on the public record.

“I’m not judging them for what they did,” he insisted.

“I’m confronting the elephant in the room. Like, I’m going to go out there and not talk about the issues in their industry?

“Don’t forget, I’ve got to be an outsider there. I mustn’t come out there as everyone’s mate and schmooze – that’s nauseating. I’ve got to come out there, and I’ve got to roast them.”

Meanwhile of The Office without Steve Carrell he said, “[The show] can survive. Whether it should or not, I don’t know.”

Gervais recently confirmed he would make a cameo appearance on the US show.

  1. Ricky did an excellent on the Golden Globes no doubt about that. Hollywood celebrities need to get over themselves big time. They are celebrities not actors or musicians full stop. Ricky told it like it is and if hollywood does not like it because they are too up themselves then that is their problem and guess what they dont have to hire him next time. They can hire a robot like they always do who does nothing but suck up.

  2. The Hollywood stars need to get over themselves. As for Ricky….just like he said, he needs to be true to himself. That my friends is a rare human quality. Go Ricky!

  3. Thanks Trix, you are correct, although it took me a couple of goes to fathom it. From previous interactions and my experience of your comments, I appreciate your wisdom. I havent got the leather hide of a Robert Downey Jnr or Tim Allen, nor do i want one!

  4. Hmm, a circular argument about respecting others and not making them the butt of their jokes, about a person who some see as not respecting others and making them the butt of their jokes … personally I like to get in first and make myself the butt of my jokes – saves time, and I usually come up with better lines!
