Minor Spoilers: This year’s season of Doctor Who has been split in half, with the first seven episodes set to air in the UK spring and the remaining six episodes running in autumn.
Splitting seasons into blocks is not uncommon but usually more evident in US television than UK.
Meanwhile, the cast have been in Cornwall this week filming a “pirate” episode when the Tardis accidentally lands on board a pirate ship in the late 1600s.
Hugh Bonneville is reportedly playing a pirate captain.

This is old news. The BBC announced this last year. Steven Moffatt specifically requested the split because the story line justified the need for a big cliffhanger. It may also be the precursor back to a full time Autumn slot, which is something both Russell T Davies wanted during his tenure. It also means that they won’t have to worry about a fall in ratings with the onset of summer, which has occured in the past few years. Old Doctor Who generally had an autumn slot.
I would also expect the BBC to begin airing at Easter, this is when the previous series have started.
“I can’t tell you the date yet because the BBC haven’t told me what date they’re transmitting yet but we’re going close to UK TX again,” he says.
“Australians are great downloaders and they don’t want to wait until Easter to see a Christmas episode, so if we can get it out straight away we will.”

What? Merlin will be delayed? Now I’m annoyed!!!!
Still, I’m dying for our Autumn as it sounds like the ABC will be fast-tracking the episodes according to that interview on this blog with that new big-wig from the ABC!!!.
I just wish the BBC would hurry up and announce a return date already so we can start counting down and getting excited! They can be do frustrating sometimes, especially with putting off Merlin a year. But I do love the concept of a split season though, allows for more cliffhangers!
I think this a good idea, three doses of Doctor Who this year, thanks to the spilt series. And David Walliams has announced that he’ll be playing an alien in Doctor Who.
@Craig, there are set pictures of her sword fighting, swinging on ropes and wearing a pair of hot pink tights haha. She’s great! 😀
I like this coz steven moffat said there will be 2 cliffhangers at the end of each split season but since the second half is being shown in autumn it means that merlin season 4 wont show till January 2012 Agghh!!!! coz once DW finishes merlin takes over its timeslot
I think the spilt seasons is possibly a good thing cause means they can produce half of season one season and maybe the first 2 episodes for the following season
Giving them a headstart
@dee123 – I don’t think Johnson meant will it air here first but will ABC delay the season to show all 13 eps together. Like others I doubt they will, just hope they fast track the eps less than a week after the UK like they did with the xMas special.
Pretty sure it will be split here too and we’ll get it sooner than later!!
There is no way we will get to see the whole season before the U.K.
Any news for the Australian air date??
Will the ABC show all 13 episodes in consecutive weeks or split the season like the BBC?
I both love and hate this idea, on the one have we won’t have a huge break before the next xMas special, but then again we’ll have to wait a few months to see the remainder or the season.
Now I just hope ABC doesn’t decided to hold off showing the first part until later in the year so they have no breaks. Cause you know the fans will just go else where to get their Who fix.
Can I just add that Karen looks cute in the pirate hat 🙂
