Actor Matthew Newton has returned to Northside Clinic in Sydney for treatment following a charge of breaching an AVO.

Actor Matthew Newton has returned to Northside Clinic in Sydney for treatment following a charge of breaching an AVO.

Friends say he had been planning to return to the clinic before he presented at King’s Cross Police Station on Tuesday.

It is alleged Newton contacted former girlfriend Rachael Taylor via text messaging. He was charged with contravening the terms of an intervention order and using a telephone to harass, menace or intimidate.

Some media reports claim police will allege there were dozens of texts to Taylor.

Last night’s A Current Affair said parents Bert and Patti Newton would not speak to media about the matter. Both gave a lengthy interview last year, to a mixed reception.

If found guilty of the latest charge, Newton could be jailed for up to two years or have a conviction, previously suspended, recorded against him.

He was granted bail to appear before Downing Centre Local Court on March 2.
