Australian Story: Mar 28

Australian Story looks at a courtcase in which a father was found guilty of murdering his three sons by driving a car into a dam.

This week Australian Story looks at a headline-grabbing courtcase in which Robert Farquharson was found guilty of murdering his three sons by driving a car into a dam on Father’s Day in 2005.

He maintained he had a coughing fit but now his supporters speak to Australian Story, detailing more about the background to the case.

Last year, a Victorian court sentenced Robert Farquharson to a minimum 33 years jail for triple murder – for deliberately driving his three sons to their death in a Winchelsea dam. It was the second time a jury had convicted him of the crime.

Farquharson claimed he had a coughing fit and was unconscious when his car ran off the road on Father’s Day 2005.

Initially his ex-wife Cindy Gambino refused to believe he had murdered the children. Three years later she changed her mind and withdrew her support.

But Farquharson still has a diverse group of supporters, including family, friends and some experts, who continue to insist it was a terrible accident.

They speak out for the first time on Australian Story.

Friend Michael Hart saw Farquharson hours before the boys’ deaths – but says he was never interviewed by police.

Cindy Gambino’s former best friend Wendy Kennedy, reveals how Farquharson dealt with the break-up of his marriage and she describes her observations about his relationship with his three boys.

As Cindy Gambino’s close confidante, she was chosen to read the eulogy at the boys’ funeral but the two women are now estranged because, she says of her dislike of Stephen Moules, the third party involved in the break-up of the Farquharson marriage.

The program poses the question; have Farquharson’s family and supporters been grossly deceived and misled – or is there some substance to their campaign?

It airs 8pm Monday on ABC1.

  1. The story on Farquarson was very one sided. Where was the evidence for the prosecution? Important details like the headlights being in the off position? The change in direction of the car on its way down the bank? The witness who said he was swerving all over the road? I’m surprised Australian Story only had one side of the story to tell. Those little boys have gone and we need to hear and tell their story for them. He was found guilty for more than what we saw on Monday night.

  2. I had concerns about this one after reading the description of it above. I’m suprised and disappointed to find such sensationalist and uncritical hogwash on Australian Story. Are they hiring producers from ACA now? The gist of this programme tonight – Farquharson’s friends and sisters can’t believe he did it. They wouldn’t would they. I can’t watch Australian Story again without a great measure of distrust and skepticism.
