Christopher and His Kind: trailer

You've never quite seen Matt Smith like this before.

You’ve never quite seen Matt Smith like this before.

This weekend in the UK the Doctor Who star will appear in a BBC telemovie based on the life of gay writer Christopher Isherwood.

After living in 1930s Berlin, Isherwood wrote Goodbye to Berlin. His creation of the Sally Bowles character would eventually became the basis for Cabaret.

In this bio-pic, Isherwood arrives in the city to stay with his close friend and occasional lover, the poet WH Auden. The city’s thriving gay subculture captivates him but he soon finds himself heartbroken after the failure of a hopeless love affair, and sets out on a process of self-discovery amidst the chaos of Berlin.

The cast also includes Toby Jones, Douglas Booth, Imogen Poots and Iddo Goldberg.

No Aussie date for this one yet.

  1. Interestingly Australian audiences were among the first in the world to see it with the film becoming the hit of the Mardi Gras film festival screening it to packed houses.
It is witty and definately worth watching – his performance is great. He has a few accent issues but to be honest Isherwood apparently had a tough accent to master. Lindsay Duncan steals all he’r scenes as his mum (the second time they’ve played mother and son). Pip (his co-star in Party Animal) also stands out.

Interestingly Australian journos were the first to ask and write about his “other project” although he was tight lipped beyond saying he was doing something about Berlin).

As far as the of doctor who is concerned – I think David Tennant, Peter Davison, Christopher Eccleston, Paul McGann and Slyvester McCoy might all disagree with you. You can ask Colin Baker what he thinks when he comes here for Supanova next month!!

  2. @Phoenix : I stand corrected somewhat, though wouldn’t it have been nice if at least one of those fine fellows had gone on to bigger TV or film careers? There’s certainly no shortage of talent amongst them.

  3. @Mac: I don’t accept your premise on the “Curse of Who” Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Tom Baker and Sylverster McCoy are all still in demand ok mostly in the theater but they’re all still working. Peter Davison is about to start as on of the regulars on the UK version of Law & Order (Which I’m very much looking forward to.)

Perhaps the problem with Christoper Eccleston is he hasn’t accepted the right roles. Happens to every actor.

  4. Interested to see Smith non-Whoing it. Just hope “the curse of Who” doesn’t affect his extra-curricular roles, lest we forget Eccelstone’s roles over the last few years *shudder*.

  5. Toby Jones had appeared with Matt Smith before in the Doctor Who episode Amy’s Choice.

Iddo Goldberg is Billie Piper’s co-star in Secret Diary of a Call Girl and Smith had appeared with Goldberg before when Smith was a guest star in an episode of that series.

  6. It’s showing at the Brisbane Queer Film Festival in April.

I suspect it’s been shown or will be shown at the Queer Film Festivals in other cities as well.
