ABC News Breakfast making the switch to ABC1

ABC News Breakast switches to ABC1 in early May and adds a new segment.

As has been previously reported ABC News Breakfast is moving from ABC2 to ABC1 on Monday May 2nd.

It will continue to be simulcast live on ABC News 24, and broadcast on ABC1 each weekday morning from 6am-9am AEST (which means viewers in WA for example can see it much earlier on ABC News 24).

As part of the move it will have new segments, including a regular political discussion, ‘The Party Line’ interviewing political leaders and news makers. There will also be more focus on local and regional issues, with the presenters getting out on the road more.

News Director Kate Torney said, “ABC News Breakfast’s move to ABC1 strengthens the network’s live news coverage on the main channel, and offers more quality news from the start of the day, and right throughout, with the Midday News, regular news updates during the afternoon, the 7pm News bulletins, and completing the day with 7.30, Lateline and Lateline Business.

Hosted by Virginia Trioli and Michael Rowland the show inclues sports news and interviews with Paul Kennedy, weather updates with Vanessa O’Hanlon, and political news with correspondent Melissa Clarke in Canberra.

Regular guests include Waleed Aly, Bruce Guthrie, Barrie Cassidy and Sally Warhaft.

Executive Producer, Tim Ayliffe added, “ABC News Breakfast offers a distinctly different approach to breakfast TV, providing comprehensive coverage of the major stories of the day. The program harnesses the ABC’s unrivalled domestic and international resources to offer a credible, and fast-paced national breakfast program that reacts instantly to events as they happen.”

Children’s programs that are currently on ABC1 from 6am to 9am will move across to digital channel ABC2 on May 2nd.

  1. naturalnews.com/032568_Fukushima_dead_zone.html how about the real news. You guys are part of the problem. So many lies, so little truth. You would make good gardeners.

  2. Ducko, I understand you want the best of both worlds. But for most people interested in hard news, I suspect you’re in the minority. The above all concern for people working at News Breakfast should be to inform viewers, not entertain them. Yes, they won’t be beating Today & Sunrise ratings-wise with that strategy, but time spent with Virginia & Michael engaging in silly little chats (maybe asking how their weekend went, etc) is time wasted for the real news to be discussed. Anyway, with most of the serious topics that air on News Breakfast, how can they get all ‘light-hearted’ between stories? Sounds like that could make for some awkward television & might even make the whole program offensive to watch.

If you’ve noticed, BBC One is a naked ratings grabber over in the UK, & I don’t want ABC1 to go down the same path (even if it does sometimes – aka, anything hosted by Adam Hills).

Can’t you just be happy you’re getting the news of the day presented in a calm & reasoned manner? Does everything on television have to be ‘entertaining’? When did that rule start?

  3. @ Stan,
Please read Russell’s reply. It makes more sense than your tirade.
Just because we think that News Breakfast is boring doesn’t mean we want the froth & bubble of the commercial networks. Have you ever seen BBC’s morning news programme? Why can’t we have something like that?

  4. Why is it that when ever “Breakfast” it criticized for being dull, boring and bland people instantly jump to “well the other option is the morning cheese fest that is Sunrise or Today”

Who says boring and dull television is synonymous with quality and intelligent and lively energetic Tv is synonymous with crap.

Why can’t Bteakfast be something in between?

Morning Joe on Msnbc in the US is a brilliant show. Intelligent, smart, insightful coverage of the news in a lively energetic dynamic way.

Breakfast is not just dull it’s badly produced television. They need a new EP and new energy and a team that is no so focused on being the anti Sunrise or Today.

They need an EP and team who wants to make the best most interesting morning show on Tv

  5. @The Harp. Why would moving it to Sydney help? Do you think that TV can’t be produced in Melbourne? That the ABC should follow the other breakfast programmes, so we have three Sydney-centric shows rather than just two?

Almost all of the ABC’s national news and current affairs programmes are already made in Sydney. It is supposed to be the national broadcaster so I’m glad they are making at least one news programme elsewhere.

  6. Surely with all the talented presenters in the ABC family this show can find someone more interesting than Michael Rowland and less paternalistic & opinionated than Virginia Trioli. She is painful and drags Michael down.

Michael was a fantastic correspondent, but this is not his calling.

  7. @Alec I would hope that someone who uses the words “boringest and stupidest” wouldn’t find this show interesting. 7 & 9 have it covered there.

  8. I totally agree with brisvegas. If you want to see cats doing stupid things on youtube, watch Sunrise or Today. If you want some real news, watch ABC News Breakfast. Yes, it’s pretty dry, but that’s what I want from my news. I don’t care for pandas, toddlers singing, what Liz and Shane are doing or some new fad diet.

Dave: Thanks for the clarification about ABC2 showing the preschool programming in the morning.

  9. Haha! Salf, Russell, Alec, Ducko; you people have no idea! I’ll continue to watch News Breakfast while you guys get your sugar fixes through Hey Hey It’s A Weekday on the other channels.

  10. If people find it too dull and boring, then change channel and watch C9 or C7.
If you want to start your day with a belly full of news, watch this show. Plain and simple.

So what if there’s no chemistry between the hosts? IMHO – I think there is chemistry – but it’s not the sort of chemistry you see on the other channels. At the risk of drawing fire from previous commentators on here, the chemistry isn’t juvenile (C9) or paternal (C7).

  11. From my understanding ABC News Breakfast on ABC1 is running through until 10am, as it’s then going to be followed by the ABC’s schools programming (Designers, Ace Day Jobs, Numbers Count, Behind The News, etc).

  12. Will stick to sunrise with Kochie and Mel but sack Jessica Rowe from Weekend Sunrise and replace her with Sharyn Gridella. I can’t stand her during news bulletins.

  13. excited for their move! this show is a breath of seriousness in the morning, while the other two spiral further into the midst of uninformed opinions.
if you wake up everyday and ask yourself “is the world OK”, this is the show for you.

  14. Bogues: 1. ABC News Breakfast moves from ABC2 mornings to ABC1 mornings airing from 6am-9am.

    2. The preschool content on ABC2 extends its hours to 6am, screening until 7pm daily

    3. ABC3 remains untouched. Viewers will still be able to find school-age content from 6am-9pm daily.

  15. abc news breakfast is the most dullest, boringest and stupidest show on television. The show has no life to it. No thrills or highs. The presenters always look sleepy and suicidal and the set is just as boring to look at. They really need to revamp everything if the abc want it to compete well against the commercial networks. Its just like in the movie ‘Morning Glory’. abc news breakfast is like the breakfast show before the new producer comes in and revamps everything. Maybe thats what abc news breakfast needs, a new producer!

  16. Thank God. Something other than inane kid’s junk on 3 ABC channels. Don’t fret, mummy’s favourite babysitter will still be on 2 channels. At least “Breakfast” can now been seen via all of those SD set top boxes that were sold as “all you need for digital TV” by the department store wannabe-tech-geeks.

  17. This has always been my choice for news , sport and politics over any of the other shows that are on in the morning , no stupid giggling hosts laughing at dumb jokes and making stupid faces at the camera. Both Michael and Virginia are a great team together as are the others. No adds as well and who can forget her crazy expression about Barnaby Joyce , lol.

  18. i know it is unaustralian to bag the ABC but this is the most boring show i have ever seen. its all wrong, there is no chemistry between the hosts even though they have been on for a couple of years now. they would be better off just airing a really long news bulletin instead.

  19. My understanding is that the shows currently on ABC1 in the morning are not moving to ABC2 on May 2nd, based on ABC’s adverts. Shows like Studio 3 will be moving to ABC3, while pre school programming will be on ABC2 from May 2nd.
