Doctor Who to pay tribute to Elisabeth Sladen

Who's production team are "planning something suitable" to remember Elisabeth Sladen in the new episode at Easter.

Doctor Who will pay tribute to Elisabeth Sladen when the show returns for a new series in the UK this Saturday.

Sladen, who played Sarah Jane Smith for many years, passed away yesterday morning after battling cancer.

Asked if a tribute to Sladen will be featured on the upcoming episode, a spokesperson for Doctor Who told Digital Spy that the show’s production team are “planning something suitable”.

Just what that might include was not available.

The episode will air on ABC1 at 7:30pm Saturday April 30th.

Following her passing, Matt Smith said: “What struck me about Lis was her grace. She welcomed me, educated me, and delighted me with her tales and adventures on Doctor Who. And she also seemed to have a quality of youth that not many people retain as they go through life. Her grace and kindness will stay with me because she had such qualities in abundance and shared them freely. I will miss her, as will the world of Doctor Who and all the Doctors that had the good pleasure to work with Lis Sladen and travel the universe with Sarah Jane.”

David Tennant said: “I just can’t believe that Lis is gone. She seemed invincible. The same woman who enchanted my childhood, enchanted my time on Doctor Who and enchanted generations who have watched her and fallen in love with her – just like I did. I feel very honoured to have shared a TARDIS with Sarah Jane Smith, and I feel very lucky to have shared some time with Lis Sladen. She was extraordinary.”

  1. I do hope the Beeb pays proper tribute to Lis’ amazing contribution to Dr Who over four decades. If the 15 minute tribute does happen, I really hope ABC includes it in the broadcast.
She (and her Doctors) owned Aunty’s 6:30 timeslot through the 70s and 80s.

I am with Patrick – just thinking about this loss has me close to tears still.

  2. There is a tribute by Tom Baker mid way through the Tribute page over here:

I was more interested to hear what he had to say, since I grew up with him and Elisabeth Sladen as my Dr/Companion (along with pertwee). They gave me so many years of entertainment as a child. I’m pretty devistated about this news.

  3. Nice to see they will do that for her. She was a lovely lady and I cannot believe she is gone. I better stop typing otherwise I will cry – again.

  4. You know in a show where the lead character was always being recast, Elisabeth Sladen was the one constant face of that show. I don’t think any other companion has been as popular as Sarah Jane Smith, what with the frequent returns on the show from then until now, the novels and then spin off. Okay so it’s the writing as well, the development of the character, but I think especially in the new series of Doctor Who Elisabeth Sladen really brought something to the screen: warmth, familiarity, fun etc.

I hope the tribute is worthy of her time and devotion to that show, and I’m pretty sure it will be 🙂

  5. According to doctorwhonews.net and the BBC they will be doing a 15 minute tribute show after Doctor Who finishes on BBC1. Plus a dedication during the show.

  6. I don’t know if this will help or hurt ABCs ratings, on the one have fans have just a week to wait but many may not be willing to do that to see the tribute to Sladen. JMO
