Stars align in new Freeview campaign

For the first time ever competing network talent have come together to promote Freeview in a new campaign.

Rival network personalities will appear in a new Freeview campaign from Sunday evening.

Freeview has gathered together more than 40 on-air talent for its new campaign. Kerri-Anne Kennerley (Nine), Les Murray (SBS), Gary Mehigan (TEN), Tom Williams (Seven) and Kayne Tremills (ABC) all took part in a three day shoot, the first time ever that competing network talent have come together to promote free-to-air television.

The new campaign goes to air on Sunday with the theme “Everyone loves Freeview.” It will celebrate the 16 channels and their successes.

79% of households are now watching Freeview, with an increase in the hours of TV watched (three hours and 10 minutes every day during 2010).

Freeview CEO Robin Parkes said, “We are so excited to have pulled off such a complex shoot with all our on-air talent and the end result looks fantastic. This is testament to the success of the partnership between the free-to-air networks, having all the talent come together to support the campaign. The celebrities from all the networks had a huge amount of fun on the sets in Melbourne and Sydney which you can see in the commercial!”

“The new Freeview TV campaign is a celebration of the great content that is offered across Freeview’s full suite of digital channels. It’s also a celebration of the success of these channels and the fact that all this great content is free – the way TV should be.”

The campaign will launch on Sunday 8th May at 6.27pm Eastern standard time nationally as part of a multi-network roadblock with three commercials: 1 x 60 second, 1 x 30 second and 1 x 15 second (network specific version).

A 30 second commercial will be introduced on 15 May and a 15 second commercial will launch on 22 May.

The campaign launches on the same day as ONE revamps.

  1. Judging from that first cap, it looks like they are using those horrible low resolution channel logo images which feature on the website. It’s now One, not One HD, and the SBS logo is not red.

  2. Can someone explain to me what of Freeview is? My TV has a built in Digital Tuner which gives me Every SD and HD FTA channel, and from the sound of it, that’s all Freeview offers.

  3. Freeview, get nicked. Nothing’s changed. Programs still don’t stick to their schedule, i know my EPG doesn’t always update times. And the networks still neglect to utilise their new channels. Seven said they’d show AFL in Sydney/Brisbane on 7mate in the new tv rights deal. When the hell are Nine gonna show NRL live in Adelaide on GO????

  4. Are they still flogging this dead horse? Take a look at the latest TVs and PVRs, the industry has bypassed and forgotten all about “Freeview”.

It was only ever an exercise to stop ad-skipping and introduce tighter DRM anyway, it’s not like anyone will miss it.

  5. The reason Freeview has been such a success is because of all those old shows that we haven’t seen for a long time which is why people are dropping out of Foxtel and embracing the new digital channels.

Just look at the ratings of some of the older shows compared to the newer shows eg. The Office only getting 80K in a primetime slot compared to the classic Bewitched managing 120K in a 5.30pm slot, Star Trek Next Generation getting upto 170K in a 9.30pm slot with absolutely no advertising beating all other Channel 11 hyped up primetime offerings and there are countless other examples.

Also 7TWO which is filled with more primetime repeats of older shows than any other digital network is also the number 1 digital channel now. That is no coincidence. Most of the new stuff is crap which is why it quickly moves timeslots or gets shafted much to the disdain of a few whingers who actually did watch it. Nothing beats the classic shows and I hope they bring back more of them in the future.

  6. All you people complaining about something that’s free… Freeview doesn’t own & run the networks! They just run the marketing campaigns & EPGs. It’s like blaming the bank when your boss doesn’t pay you for the fortnight.

  7. When I think Freeview, I think of programs that don’t start or finish on time, long and frequent commercial breaks, with programs actually cut to fit more commercials in, playing where’s Wally with shows that seem to be constantly on the move and of course my personal favourite, delayed sport.

I’m sorry Freeview, your consistant arrogance and lack of respect for the viewing public makes statements like “Everone loves Freeview” beyond ridiculous. You have a long, long way to go to be able to make such a statement.

  8. “… the great content that is offered across Freeview’s full suite of digital channels”. You’re kidding right? Have you actually watched the commercial digitals? Hours and hours of old shows from last century, endless repeats of current series, virtually no native HD, and what there is, is compressed to buggery. And good luck if you can find where your program has gone – David, you are a godsend in this regard.

I’m actually watching less FTA than I used to.

  9. My opinion of Freeview is that it’s satisfactory. It’s still quite poor compared to what is on offer in the UK, where they have far more channels. For convenience, they also have timeshift channels for most stations. Freeview in Australia still has a long way to go, but it’s not bad. The biggest downside, as mentioned by Leon, is that there’s not much HD content, even on HD channels. As bandwidth is limited, they should make the most of their HD bandwidth.

  10. Yeah so does the 16 channels include community TV on 31? If so, who would be their best ‘iconic’ personality to feature? Vasili perhaps? Other candidates?

  11. Everyone likes free stuff, but you get what you pay for… loads of ads every 5 minutes, programs starting 10 minutes late most nights, shows being pushed around after a few weeks or canceled to be buried late at night… the list goes on.

  12. Just shows you how out of touch Freeview is

Kerri-Anne Kennerley, Les Murray , Tom Williams… these are not the reasons people watch TV. They watch to see shows and great stories told.

  13. the FTA networks still really don’t give a damn about HD, how many shows from the 60s/70s/80s/90s are flooding thier so-called (HD) channels. even though THEY are only SD-Quality!

..how many current shows are out there that should be broadcast in HD that arent’t Until the FTA Networks are willing to get serious on that, ..i won’t take this seriously!

  14. By 16 channels I hope they mean when you include community TV and not the ridiculous idea that SBS ONE and SBS ONE HD count as two channels.
