Matt Preston on Immunity Pins: “I don’t think it’s quite worked”

MasterChef's Matt Preston appeared on The Circle and made some interesting comments about the use of the show's Immunity Pin.

MasterChef‘s Matt Preston appeared on The Circle yesterday and made some interesting comments about the Immunity Pin which has been a feature of the show’s 2nd and 3rd seasons.

“The Immunity pin has been a really interesting one this year, because we changed it last year, it was getting too hard to win,” he said.

“The idea was to try and level the playing field, but I don’t think it’s quite worked. It’s an interesting challenge. There’s been a lot of conversation about Eamon Sullivan coming on, who won Celebrity MasterChef who is an amazing cook and whether you can go from Eamon won week to Teage Ezard who’s the amazing Melbourne chef after?”

He also said the Grand Final announcement would be live and has a big surprise in store.

  1. The immunity pins are a good concept if the playing field is fair. Bringing Eamon Sullivan on was ridiculous and gave Dani a free ride, even after she had messed up numerous dishes. I applaud Alana for finally voicing the fact that it was unfair that she was up for elimination. Not only was the fact she was up unfair, so was the fact she had 2 dishes to cook in 45 mins whilst Ellie had 1 to do in 75mins. The key to the success of the first two series was the fact the contestants had brilliant food knowledge – this year, most of them havent. Many don’t know the basics and have managed to make it to the top 5. Favourtism has not been appealing.

  2. I don’t think any of those left will inspire many cook book sales. Nice people no doubt but no x-factor like Julie Goodwin. I hope Kate wins nevertheless.

  3. I still think that anyone in the top three of a challenge should earn points towards an immunity pin and bottom three lose points. Consistently good cooks rewarded. Consistently bad cooks penalised

  4. The immunity pin is trying to add strategy to the show, but the show isn’t about strategy, it’s about cooking. Get rid of the pin and just say winning the challenge lets you skip the next elimination, or you’re automatically through to the next week or something.

  5. I’m a different Steve.. the original, if you will.. lol

Anyway.. my two cents would be to drop immunity as the prize and offer something more valuable on the day such as ‘extra time’ perhaps for challenges. In saying that there should be more individual challenges, I’m so over these group catering episodes.

Keep the professional chef except this time get the judges to pick a random dish on the Chef’s menu and only give the contestant the recipe. And no more head starts. That would be the fairest scenario

  6. The constant re-capping commentary from the talentless contestants telling us what is happening, or just happened, or just happened before the break is excrutiating.

It seems like the program believes that no one is actually watching the show, that they are all just “tuning in” occasionally. Look, we know what happened two minutes ago, and we are not goldfish – our memory serves us slightly better. I remember that we are cooking a mystery box today!

  7. The cat was out of the bag long before the show aired (via Herald Sun) this evening.

And ‘Congrats’ to George and his partner Nat on the arrival of a baby son named James.

  8. I’m done with the show – gave up 4 weeks ago- too much of the lifesaver dude and not much on others. What a pity they runied a great show- too many cliches and “i don’t have enough time to finish” lines- really can’t be taken seriously anymore…

  9. Yes big failure this year. I hope next year there will be more cooking skills and less of “my grandma cooked this”. I’m a grandma and I hope my grandkids don’t remember me for my cooking skills or lack of……lol.

  10. He’s damn right the immunity challenge hasn’t worked this year. It hasn’t really worked in any of the three series. The fast-tracking reward in series one was a complete disaster and the pin was far too hard to win last year. This year it has been too easy, and it is ludicrous that immunity can be won just by equalling the professional’s score. Not on!!! The contestant needs to beat the chef to win such an amazing advantage, not just equal him. I wouldn’t care if they dropped the celebrity chef challenge and thought up something other form of reward.

  11. Who cares if last year was too hard. That is the point isn’t it. Its for immunity. This year they have been let off so much and had so much help its beyond belief. This years contestants are mediocre at best compared to the past 2 seasons. Sorry but its true. I still like Alana and Kate and hope they win but compared to the final 5 last year and the year before to this year its blatantly obvious.

  12. I was cranky as that Michael got such a intense dish after Dani pranced through a simple recipe from a ameteur cook, no offence to Eamonn, not his fault.
So very very very wrong, unfair.
As Dan says, immunity pins are fine and add spice, just keep it fair , that made an absolute mockery of Michael, it came across as blatant favouritism, not saying it was, just saying that’s how it looked.
It’s a shame that marred my favourite show, give me something to work with so I can keep defending the show!!!!!!!!!!

  13. I have just read on the HS website that tonights full episode with the latest elimination could be viewed on the MC website earlier today…is this true?

  14. Keep the immunity pin, but there should be No help at all from other Chef or the peanut gallery up stairs…. none! The peanut gallery up stairs should never be able to help those in eliminations either.

Also immunity challenges should be Professional Chefs only, not their apprentice or anyone else.

They also need to show more of the contestants cooking, especially on the Sunday night not just best and worse, it’s boring and predicable, and you don’t develop a relationship (if that’s the right word) with the contestants in the middle cause you never see them. Eg. Alana.

They could easily fit this in by cutting or even halving the useless commentaries from contestants and clichéd lines the judge’s use, we have heard it all before and it’s so annoying!

But the most important thing, don’t eliminate all the best cooks and leave the crap ones to the end.

I have given up with the show this year as I couldn’t bare the Danni/Ellie show any longer. It’s not about their personalities which by the way I do find annoying, it’s that these two should have been eliminated weeks ago.

  15. Agree whole heartedly the immunity challenges have been pretty poor this year way uneven playing fields!
Agree as well you can only have one pin at a time and you should choose to use the pin before entering a challenge! Poor Allana will have to go up tonight whilst Dani gets to live another week I cringe at the thought of having to watch her for another week. 🙁 I still like the show but a few things this year have been off!

  16. Just brainstorming here…how about make the immunity pin challenge up against former Masterchef contestants every week. But make the prize less valuable, say, the pin has a two week expiry then has to be returned if unused. It’s easier to win, it’s fair, and it’s entertaining seeing past contestants.

  17. If all the chef challenges were consistent throughout the year it would be okay but some weeks you have a chef having to recreate someones dish and others it’s their own dish. Then you get dani winning her second pin against an amateur.

  18. Giant fail is what it has been Master Chef.

You better sort yourselves out next year and please find whoever set up Eamon at this late stage in the competition and smack him/her upside the head please.

  19. For next season of MasterChef, amateur chefs should only appear on the first few weeks of immunity challenge. After that it should all be professional chefs. Also, the rules should be tightened e.g. a contestant could only have one pin at a time, and he or she must use the pin before an elimination challenge, before he or she gets the chance to win it again.

  20. the immuinty pin challenges are ok so long as it is fair putting one contestant up against a professional chef then putting another contestant up against a swimmer is not fair and masterchef deserved all the criticism it got for that immunity challenge
