3 million viewers watch The Block as Nine nudges 47% share

Over 3 million viewers for The Block and 2.5m for Underbelly as Nine scores a home run and the biggest network share of the year.

The finale of The Block will have them popping the champers and reaching for the record books today.

A whopping 3.09m viewers watched The Block: The Winner Announced last night -the single biggest audience of the year.

The figure tops the 2.98m who watched Australia’s Got Talent: The Winner Announced and the 2.74m who watched MasterChef Australia: The Winner Announced.

Nine coded the night into three parts with The Block: Auction at 2.7m and The Block: Grand Final at 2.28m. The Winner Announced was for the final ten minutes 8:25-8:35pm.

The show peaked at 3.42m viewers.

The numbers were just as strong in Sydney as in Melbourne, with 1,006,000 watching in the latter and 1,003,000 in the former.

It puts the finale on par with its inaugural 2003 finale of 3.11m viewers -but to do so in the current multichannel landscape makes it even more impressive.

For 2011 the show is now bettered only by the Royal Wedding, which gathered some 6m viewers across several channels.

It also gave Nine the perfect platform for Underbelly: Razor which pulled a massive 2.51m and 2.09m for its double episodes.

It peaked at 2.9m viewers with its biggest audience in Sydney at 873,000 viewers. With Timeshifted figures yet to be added in, those numbers could still go higher.

Collectively Nine pulled out a stunning evening share of 46.9%.  It is easily the biggest network share of the year.

Seven was a long way behind on 26.5%. TEN was out of the race on just 12.5%.

The best figure the opposition could manage against Nine last night was Seven News (Sunday) on 1.38m viewers.

Nine is already calling for applicants for its next season of The Block.

  1. @Moanique in Brisbane: Networks and ratings don’t care if you liked or didn’t like the program, they just care that you bothered enough to stay tune in.

‘Bums on seats’ as the saying goes.

Personally I got more enjoyment watching a re-run of The Simpsons on Eleven. I wonder if it was a coincidence that the Brazil-themed episode of The Simpsons was on the day after the repeat of the Brazil episode of An Idiot Aboard (One). Both shows portrayed the country in much the same light… that it’s a country where people like to party a lot and wear very little on the beach 🙂

The movie on Eleven last night was OK too for a bit of lightweight entertainment… but really, anything with Catherine Tate I think is worth a watch!

  2. This may have rated well but when you look at the entertainment value it was zero.
I agree with alot of the posts here in that there was no entertainment value in it at all.It dragged for so long it wasnt funny.Poor Scott Cam looking bewildered or is that normal for him.

  3. People watched this?
I kinda felt this year’s block was pretty devoid of both buzz and interesting contestants.
David, out of interest, what were the network shares for the individual cities, do you know?

  4. I kept flicking onto the block, and found it totally mind-numbingly boring. So everyone worked so hard for nothing!! Surely others won’t even be bothered. I stayed to watch Underbelly (yes the ads had me interested) but gave up very quickly. No Midsomer Murder or British mystery on the ABC so I ended up watching a DVD – something I wanted to see and no ads!!!!!!

  5. hey people. 3million people didnt watch last night. it was actually only 136 people who represent about 22,000 per ratings box which equates to approx 3,000,000.

  6. Did anyone get sick of all the promotion for Channel 9’s Sunday night? I could handle Ray “Rabbits” Warren telling me every 5 minutes what was coming up tonight but I couldnt handle Ken Sutcliffe telling me to watch tonight. Its the news for Christ sake. So I purposely didnt watch anything on Channel 9 because of it. I’m sick to death of it. Because they got 3million people watching its just going to get worse. Stop promoting shows during other shows.

  7. The Block may have pulled the biggest audience of the year, but were they entertained ? I certainly wasn’t. It was a total waste of time watching it.

As for Underbelly Razor, I quite liked it, but the actress who played Tilly Devine drove me crazy with that pathetic English accent. I cannot believe the Director didn’t pull her up on it right at the start. Otherwise I thought the production, sets, costumes etc were very good.

  8. That was expected for Nine last night. Seven held up very well while TEN, well TEN got wiped.

I personally didn’t enjoy Underbelly last night. I will record it next week and assess it after the 3rd episode.

  9. With 3.09 million households tuning in, it’s a shame the Auctioneers were so poor? What bad publicity for auctions – the best form of marketing in my opinion. Sadly, this was not a good display at all.

Come to Brisbane & the Sunshine Coast next year – we’ll show you how to do Auctions properly!!!

  10. @MuchTB..the first 20 mins of UB was scary…it was stylised and I was thinking oh no this is gonna be really crap, but it settled down and fleshed out the characters and their rivalries quite well. So far so good.

“Nine is already calling for applicants for its next season of The Block.” seriously who is gonna be dumb enough to waste their time.

Great numbers for ch9 that were desperately needed, but such a lame ending to the block….ironic, the biggest numbers for the weakest finale…go figure

  11. Not a totally unexpected result, it will be very interesting to see if they can hold onto the lead for the rest of the week. I didn’t watch Nine (or the others), preferring to catch up with some other shows.

It’s a shame the Trek movie did so bad, not a good night to premier it but I’m sure they were doing damage control last night knowing the kinds of numbers Nine would get.

  12. Great result but the show was a bit of an anti climax with only one property reaching reserve. Hopefully this won’t affect next year’s series.

Underbelly was a bit of a disappointment but I’ll definitely give it another couple of weeks. Series one really had me hooked right from the start. This one definitely looks interesting but didn’t really grab me the way I hoped it would. Hopefully it’ll build into something great.

  13. What did everyone think of Underbelly Razor? Was it better than the telemovies they screened earlier this year?

Ten got kicked in the ass last night, only a 12.5 share. Their highest rating show was Bondi Rescue, and The Renovators only pulled 407k. Bones and Castle held up rather well though
