  1. I watched this. He came across as probably not a bad person but also a rather naive and poorly-informed one.

However he was clearly treated shamefully by the Howard government – Downer’s responses in this programme painted him (Downer) in a very bad light.

    The programme was quite even-handed.

  2. It was nicely balanced. The Oz govt should have followed the lead of the UK and on principle not allowed Mr Hicks to be detained for so long. This was a huge error by the Howard govt, as it just gave their oponents another big stick to beat them with.

As for David Hicks himself, well it seems like he is or was an under educated indiividual, with very few mates who wanted some attention. It is not normal behaviour to head off to fight someone else’s conflicts.

The ‘right’ of politics needs to learn from this, either get them home from the battlefield in a body bag or get them released quickly and the media will crush them. Do not allow these folk to become a cause

  3. Very irritating – I was looking forward to the art forgery program. This sort of last minute program shifting is the sort of thing the commercial stations do.

I have very little interest in Hicks and think he should lapse back into well deserved obscurity and be thankful he wasn’t shot out of hand for being on captured on a battlefield without a uniform. Incidentally, the chances of the ABC asking “the hard questions” or of him answering them are virtually nil.

  4. Looking forward to this. I saw a bit of his 7pm Project interview. The Howard govt played it dumb, they should have retrieved him from Guantanamo asap so he could attempt to explain himself. Instead he is now portrayed by some, as a sort of martyr. He was treated very badly by 2 govts that espouse freedom and democracy, but that does not make him a good character.

I want to know what type of training he expected to receive at these camps in Pakistan & Afghanistan. Was it hospitality or hairdressing? Did it lead to a formally recognised vocational qualification? Was he using the camps to get residency status in Afghanistan? and what are his views on an open, diverse democratic society.

So I hope for a balanced doco that covers the injustice of his incarceration, but also the exposes integrity of his character and involvement with such extreme religeous zealots who are fundementally opposed to our type of society.
