Deadliest Catch down under

They've survived the worst the sea has to offer, but the Deadliest Catch captains are being tested by what Australia has to offer.

They are as rough as the roughest seas but the Captains of the Deadliest Catch are coming to terms with the unusual charms Australia has to offer, as they tour the country with a live show.

Last night Alaskan Captains Sig Hansen, Johnathan and Andy Hillstrand joined Pay TV execs and media for a dinner at Sydney’s Bel Mondo restaurant.

So far the men have become familiar with bogans and budgie smugglers, but one condiment has them baffled.

“We found out Vegemite is the best form of birth control if you put it in the right place,” said Hansen.

“I think it tastes about the same.”

During their WA visit Johnathan got a native Aussie surprise.

“I went for a swim in the Indian Ocean and din’t know you weren’t supposed to do that. I got stung by a jellyfish,” he said.

Hansen added, “That was the first time I ever had to pee on him.”

The charisma of these old sea dogs kept guests amused, just as the show has done for Discovery Channel. But there were moments to reflect on the lure of their northern oceans too.

“The Bering Sea is great for your merits because you’re never so happy when you return but then you’re happy when you leave,” admits Hansen.

The evening was capped off with one of the more distinct media events, a crab race. Of course.

The Captain’s Tour continues in Newcastle, Brisbane, Mackay, Townsville and Hobart.

New episodes of Deadliest Catch air 8:30pm Wednesdays on Discovery.
