Australian Story: Sept 5

On Monday ABC1 presents the first animal journey ever featured on Australian Story.

On Monday Australian Story has exclusive access to Black Caviar, the champion mare re-writing racing and even television history as the first animal journey ever featured on the show.

Not since the mighty Phar Lap has a horse captured the public imagination like Black Caviar. She remains unbeaten after thirteen runs and has been declared the fastest horse in the world.

She is also the first nonhuman to have her story documented on Australian Story. Black Caviar has been rested for a few months and is being readied to return to the track for her 14th contest.

If she wins, she will equal Phar Lap’s record.

With exclusive access, Australian Story goes back to where it all began on a stud farm in Victoria and documents the transformation of the lives of all her connections from breeder, trainer and jockey to fans who are storming racetracks to watch her run.

The horse worth millions of dollars is currently sharing her paddock with a 28-year-old pony and a billy goat. She is under the care of specialist trainer Peter Clarke, who says that traditionally having a goat on a property brings good luck, as well as having a calming influence on horses.

We meet her breeder, Rick Jamieson and Black Caviar’s dam Helsinge (mother) as well as the horse manager who was there when Black Caviar was born in 2006.

Black Caviar made 13 her lucky number but can she continue her un-beaten record and win her 14th straight race?

8pm Monday on ABC1.

  1. This horse is something very special. I look forward to telling my grandchildren all about this horse one day after the story of Black Cavier becomes a good piece of Aussie folklore. Hopefully I can tell it just the same way as I heard all about the legend of Phar Lap from my own grand parents. This will be a must watch program in our household.

  2. Interesting isnt it. in recent history our most succesful horses have been mares what an achievement, may it long continue. Not a horse-racing fan but i will try and watch this untill something better comes along. Still what magnificent achievements.
