David & Margaret interview Madonna

This week on At the Movies David & Margaret have an exclusive interview with singer-turned-director Madonna.

Icons meeting icons….

This week on At the Movies David and Margaret are at the Venice Film Festival and they have an exclusive interview with Madonna – who has just directed her first dramatic feature film, W.E, featuring Australia’s Abbie Cornish.

The two-tier romantic drama focuses on the affair between King Edward VIII and American divorcée Wallis Simpson, and a contemporary romance between a married woman (Cornish) and a Russian security guard.

Also on the program is an interview with one of hot contenders for best actor award this year – Michael Fassbender.

He stars in not one but two of this years line up. Early in the week he wowed critics with his portrayal of psychiatrist Carl Jung in the drama, A Dangerous Method, and this week he stunned audiences with his role as a sex addicted New York bachelor in Steve McQueen’s Shame.

Also we get a sneak peek at George Clooney’s political drama The Ides of March. Starring Ryan Gosling, George Clooney, Evan Rachel Wood, Marisa Tomei, Paul Giamatti and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

10pm Wednesday on ABC1.

    and…Who’s That Girl.
oh-oh, was I a big Madonna fan once?
    😉

  2. OMG, what a combo. Will David be able to resist a snide comment? Will Margaret gush? Hopefully neither will mention Cast Away, and as a reward, Maddie will treat them to her ‘nice’ side. (this reminds me i still have vcr footage of her ‘hello Mollie’ interview).

  3. Reviews have been mixed, with most of the negative reviews focusing on Madonna herself rather than giving the film a fair go. There have been some very decent reviews of the film, and it’s probably fair to say that if it had been the feature directorial debut of any other female director, it would be praised as a solid effort. Madonna, however, can do no right :-). The positive reviews note that it’s by no means a classic, but it’s still a decent, enjoyable film and shows promise for Madonna as a director. As for the hydrangea reference, a “journalist” (later revealed to be Italy’s version of “Borat”) approached Madonna at a press conference and presented her with a hydrangea, telling her that she was his princess. She smiled, thanked him twice, then put the flower under the table, raised her eyebrows to Abbie Cornish, then turned to Andrea Riseborough (who has received high praise for her portrayal of Wallis Simpson in the film), and said softly, “I absolutely loathe hydrangeas! Obviously he doesn’t know that”. Cue massive uproar worldwide when the video hits Youtube about what a cow Madonna is (the “journalist” had walked away by this stage and didn’t hear her private comment to Andrea). Later on, the “journalist” chases after Madonna as she’s leaving and asks her where the flower is. “My assistant has it”, she replies, and her manager pipes in with “It’s in some water”. Massive storm in a teacup! Looking forward to seeing the interview with M & D! Thanks for the heads up, David!

  4. Really interested to see how they feel about the film since it’s had such mixed reviews. <3 M the performer and hydrangea loather but Madonna the director? W.E.'ll see.
