After much speculation Eddie Murphy has been named as host of the 2012 Academy Awards.
This will be the first time that Murphy (Saturday Night Live, 48 Hrs, Beverly Hills Cop, Shrek) has hosted the event.
Oscars co-producer Brett Ratner said.”Eddie is a comedic genius, one of the greates and most influential live performers ever. With his love of movies, history of crafting unforgettable characters and his iconic performances — especially on stage — I know he will bring excitement, spontaneity and tremendous heart to the show Don (Mischner) and I want to produce in February.”
“I am enormously honored to join the great list of past Academy Award hosts from Hope and Carson to Crystal, Martin and Goldberg, among others,” Murphy said. “I’m looking forward to working with Brett and Don on creating a show that is enjoyable for both the fans at home and for the audience at the Kodak Theatre as we all come together to celebrate and recognise the great film contributions and collaborations from the past year.”
Ratner recently directed Murphy in the upcoming comedy Tower Heist.
The Oscars will be held on February 26th.

Eddie will do a great job , I can’t wait to see how the opening sequence will turn out , maybe we will see a Klump or two .
This will be interesting. Will he bring his Raw swagger to the stage? Maybe not, given since then he’s had a litany of embarrasing films – and this is a film awards show. LOLd at “comedic genius”, reminded me of his line about Stevie Wonder: “He is a musical Genius”. Haha.
Eddie hasnt been funny in years
I wonder if he was the best that they could get. I enjoy eddie as a comedian on tv or on stage but as a host in front of a big audience especially in this politically correct society i dont know if he is the right host for the job. If he is “behaved” most people might criticise that however if he is not predictably they will criticise that to. when it comes to people like Eddie Murphy they cant win because people in this day and age will bag them no matter what they do.
To paraphrase ‘Donkey’ in “Shrek”: ev’y body love Eddie.
Can’t be worse than Franco and Hathaway!
I hope that the Academy has the profanity censor button ready for his unexpected crude jokes or speeches next year.
Really? This is the 83rd Academy Awards not the “1983 Academy Awards”!
I can’t believe this is the first time he’s hosted the Oscars. He can be really funny when he wants to be, so break a leg Eddie!
