Sandra Sully & Brad McEwan: “End of an era for us”

Last night Sandra Sully said goodnight to Brad McEwan, and to the audience that had watched her across 18 years. "End of an era for us, we know it is for you too. Goodnight."

Last night Sandra Sully said goodnight to Brad McEwan, and to the audience that had watched her across 18 years on TEN Late News.

“It’ really has been an honour and a privilege to bring you the Late News for the past 18 years or so,” she said.

“Thankyou for being so loyal and so supportive.

“I really have loved every minute of it,” she said.

“End of an era for us, we know it is for you too. Goodnight.”

Although tonight is the final edition of the show, last night was Sully’s final stint as presenter.

Last November she said her goodbyes when she shifted to the 6:30pm local news in Sydney, an exercise that proved to be short-lived. She returned to Late News some months go, which has itself become short-lived.

Now she will co-host the 5pm TEN News bulletin in Sydney, but will be absent to the rest of the nation.

Sports Tonight has its final programme tonight and will be morphed into TEN’s News with McEwan also seen in the Sydney market.

Sully and McEwan’s cheeky on air chemistry added to those many late nights we’ve watched and will be remembered alongside Sully’s inspired live hosting of the 9 / 11 tragedy in 2001.

Tonight also marks the final edition of Before the Game, produced by Roving Enterprises since 2003.

  1. Josh – you are joking when you said Rove was a good show. Irony, right? Though I guess that massive crowd of 40,000 watching him Live from LA must not all be morons.

  2. I agree with the rest of the comments on this story, Sandra Sully is a great news reader warm, inviting, intelligent, looks hot and has a great voice. I have enjoyed watching her on the late news hopefully she will not be lost to Network Ten. If they are intelligent (which looks like they are not judging by the latest blunderings they have made) they will find somthing meaning ful for ther to do. As for Brad McEwan, he joined Sports Tonight i think three years ago may have been four an i think his one of the best sports hosts in the country, he and Mark Aisten are great. Still i sad time at network ten their is no doubt that when James Warburton arrives at his office he will have his work cut out for him, i hope that Lachlan (who knows nothing about building things only about destroying things) just lets him do his job but deep down i think that will not happen.

  3. 18 years? Someone needs to check their maths. When Sandra signed off at the end of last year it was 16 years… and in reality it’s probably only 16 years now as AFAIK she took over from Anne Fulwood at the late news at the end of 1995.

But that’s neither here nor there… and as much as we’ll miss her around the rest of the country I wish her all the best in her new role in Sydney 🙂

  4. When TEN decide to axe all the news presenters and wheel in Dexter from Perfect Match – Sandra and Brad could do radio together. They have a great natural chemistry.

  5. @Josh =- the whole point of “Before The Game” is that it is a show sandwiched between two AFL broadcasts – how would it make sense for TEN to keep this show going when they wont have the two AFL games that surround it??

The Footy Show is a stand alone Thursday night product. The best thing for BTG would be to move it to something like 730 Friday – but then it would be up against the Fridaty night live game

  6. The afl footy show is different. It predates 9 having the rights.

The reason btg has to end is that it relies on the Saturday night timeslot, and relies on the game after it. Since it no longer has that game it can’t stay.

  7. TEN are going to die if they keep cutting programs. I can’t believe they are cutting Before The Game just because they no longer have the rights to AFL – you don’t see NINE axing AFL Footy Show because they don’t have AFL rights. Especially seems though its by Roving Enterprises as they make the best panel shows on TV – with their being Rove, The 7pm Project, etc.

  8. You mean I missed Sandra’s last show? ): She’s my favourite TEN News presenter and was expecting tonight to be her farewell show. So who is presenting the last news tonight?
Oh well I can still see off Before the Game and Sports Night. I wonder if Pete Helliar will be dropping by on BTG? I will miss Sport Tonight’s Play of the Day.
