TEN’s The Project will get a little more competition next month when ABC News 24 discussion show The Drum is added to ABC1 for six weeks during summer.
The program will also extend to a full-hour, simultaneously across both channels.
Annabel Crabb, Steve Cannane and Tim Palmer will share the hosting duties, while on Friday nights, Peter Wilkins referees sports edition.
If it works, could the move become permanent? ABC’s 6-7pm timeslot has certainly been under-utilised for several years.
“The Drum is a great space for robust debate and intelligent and entertaining discussion. It will be a welcome addition to ABC1 over summer following its success on ABC News24,” said ABC1 Controller Brendan Dahill.
The change begins Monday, 9th January.

Good decision, The Drum is the only show I regularly watch on ABC News 24.
Well, last Monday’s episode, focusing on money matters, showed that as writers of funny captions for photographs, the panel make good economic commentators.
I like The Drum, kind of the only thing i watch on 24.
Any word on Wild at Heart season 6??
Its a great show, not sure about it going head to head with the project but I think it should be shown on ABC! as well as 24.
Now they can’t afford to make/buy-in programs from 6pm to 7pm. Just bring back repeats of The Goodies, Kenny Everett Video Cassette, Monkey, Doctor Who et al. Those were fun days. Just more proof that ABC24 continues to suck in money from other parts of the ABC. Why have 4 channels, they don’t have enough programming to separatley schedule on them?
Good decision, and I like your question about permancy David.
Great if it becomes permanent. Because hopefully they could move Time Team to the weekend maybe 7.30pm Saturday or Sunday when they air them. As I could then watch them. Instead of 6pm when it clashes with various News options.
I really like the Drum – great show, very simple but they usually get some good discussions going.
