Australian Story: Mar 12

The Chaser's Chris Taylor introduces an episode where a boy with cerebral palsy surely challenged the Make a Wish Foundation.

The Chaser‘s Chris Taylor will introduce Monday night’s Australian Story, which looks at a young boy’s power to win friends and influence people.

Given the Chaser‘s controversy with their “Make a Realistic Wish” sketch, there’s a lot of irony in this synergy …..but clearly that’s the point.

When a 10-year-old Sydney boy with cerebral palsy is offered a wish to come true by the Starlight Foundation, they anticipate a trip to the Gold Coast or maybe an Xbox.

Inspired by the late Steve Irwin, Daniel Clarke threw everyone a curve ball by wishing to save the endangered orangutans of Borneo and Sumatra.

While puzzling on how to facilitate this unprecedented request, the ‘Make a Wish’ program sent Daniel and his family to a Wallabies match with a locker room pass.

There he met then Prime Minister John Howard and “made an impact” as he shared his concerns for the future of orangutans and his goal to raise $10,000 for habitat protection.

So began a crash course in what can happen when youthful idealism clashes with hard ball politics.

8pm Monday on ABC1.

  1. In the Michael Moore TV series “The Awful Truth”, the show does a skit of the US “Make A Wish Foundation” by having the boy asking the group to send (and his family) him to an annual November deer shooting “holiday” in the North Eastern US. The group asks the boy to change the choice to something you could put on Kids’ TV in a “G” timeslot, but he does not budge. Eventually, the group grants the boys wishes. Not very PC!
