Deadly Awards 2012: winners

Spoilers: The Deadly Awards recognising Indigenous achievers were held at the Sydney Opera House on Wednesday.

Spoiler: ABC was the big winner at the 2012 Deadly Awards, recognising Indigenous achievers in Arts, Music, Entertainment, Sport and Community at the Sydney Opera House last night.

ABC1’s telemovie Mabo was named Film of the Year while Deborah Mailman and Jimi Bani awarded Best Actress of the Year and Best Actor of the Year respectively.

ABC series The Straits was named Television Show of the Year.

TV and related winners were:

Male Actor of the Year
Jimi Bani – Mabo

Female Actor of the Year
Deborah Mailman – Mabo

Film of the Year
Mabo

Community Broadcaster of the Year
Natalie Ahmat – NITV News

The Deadlys will be broadcast on SBS One on Sunday, 30 September.
Wednesday, 3 October at 9.30pm on NITV.

In Canada the relationship between french and english was once described as two solitudes.It came to mind as i read this story…other than Jessica Mauboy..I have no idea about the people or shows mentioned.Maybe it’s just me.However it seems that there’s a chasm of a divide between white and indigenous Australia within the medium of tv (along with most other sectors of society).It’s almost as if it hasn’t even reached the tokenism stage..you’ll get a Cathy Freeman or maybe a famous footy player.. but when’s the last time you saw an ordinary indigenous person in an commercial?And i’m not calling this racist,solely at any rate.I understand that commercial tv’s mandate is to deliver the optimum number of eyeballs to its advertisers,not lead a march to integration,but it’s kind of a sad situation.Separate networks coming from Sbs..two solitudes.
